Role Summary

The Remote Backend Engineer — Database Architecture & Data Processing Systems will develop server-side applications with a strong emphasis on database interaction, data integrity, and efficient processing of application information. The role includes designing data models, developing backend services, improving SQL queries, maintaining transactional workflows, and ensuring that data moves reliably between system components.

The successful candidate will work with application developers, product specialists, and infrastructure colleagues to translate business requirements into reliable data-processing solutions. Responsibilities will include implementing data validation, managing database transactions, optimising queries, investigating inconsistencies, and developing automated tests for critical data workflows.

The position is suited to a backend engineer who combines strong programming skills with a practical understanding of database design and operational data quality. The engineer will be expected to balance performance improvements with correctness, security, maintainability, and the long-term needs of the application.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain backend services responsible for storing, retrieving, validating, transforming, and processing application data.
• Design and maintain relational database schemas, table relationships, indexes, constraints, and queries that support application requirements.
• Work with databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL and apply suitable data-access techniques for the selected backend framework.
• Write and optimise SQL queries used by application endpoints, reporting functions, background jobs, and other data-processing workflows.
• Analyse slow queries and database execution plans to identify performance bottlenecks and recommend appropriate indexing or query improvements.
• Implement transactional operations that preserve data consistency when multiple related changes must succeed or fail together.
• Develop data validation rules to prevent incomplete, inconsistent, duplicated, or invalid records from entering critical application workflows.
• Build APIs and service interfaces that expose database-backed functionality to frontend applications and other authorised services.
• Implement pagination, filtering, sorting, and efficient data retrieval patterns for applications working with large datasets.
• Develop background processing tasks for data imports, scheduled updates, bulk operations, and other workloads that should not block user-facing requests.
• Design reliable handling of failed processing jobs, including suitable retries, logging, and exception management where appropriate.
• Investigate data discrepancies by tracing records through application services, database operations, integrations, and relevant logs.
• Implement appropriate database access permissions and secure handling of sensitive information in accordance with application requirements.
• Support database migration planning, schema changes, data transformations, and compatibility checks during application releases.
• Write unit and integration tests covering data access, validation rules, transaction behaviour, and important processing scenarios.
• Maintain documentation for database structures, data dependencies, migration procedures, query assumptions, and backend service behaviour.
• Collaborate with frontend engineers and product teams to clarify data requirements and ensure that backend responses support expected user workflows.
• Work with infrastructure colleagues on database configuration, backups, monitoring, deployment dependencies, and performance investigations.
• Review database-related code changes through peer review and contribute to consistent engineering standards.
• Monitor relevant application and database metrics to identify recurring performance issues, failed jobs, and unusual processing patterns.
• Identify opportunities to reduce unnecessary queries, improve processing efficiency, simplify data models, and eliminate redundant application logic.
• Assist with troubleshooting production issues and documenting corrective actions to reduce the likelihood of recurrence.

Requirements and Qualifications

• Professional experience in backend development, database-driven applications, data services, or a related engineering role.
• Strong proficiency in at least one backend programming language, such as TypeScript/JavaScript, Python, Java, C#, or Go.
• Practical experience with relational database design, SQL, query optimisation, and data integrity controls.
• Good understanding of database transactions, indexes, constraints, joins, normalisation, and schema evolution.
• Experience building APIs and integrating backend services with application databases.
• Familiarity with background jobs, scheduled processing, asynchronous tasks, or bulk data workflows.
• Understanding of application security, database access permissions, input validation, and secure handling of sensitive information.
• Experience writing automated tests for backend logic and database-dependent functionality.
• Familiarity with Git, code reviews, continuous integration, and collaborative software development practices.
• Ability to investigate complex data issues using logs, queries, application code, and supporting records.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a focus on data correctness as well as system performance.
• Familiarity with database monitoring, migration tools, Docker, or cloud-hosted database services is an advantage.
• Ability to document technical decisions and explain database or processing issues clearly to colleagues.
• Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage development work independently in a remote environment.
• A degree in computer science, software engineering, information systems, or a related discipline is advantageous; equivalent experience is also relevant.
• Professional proficiency in English is required; Estonian language skills are beneficial.
