Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Senior Backend Engineer to design, develop, and maintain reliable, secure, and scalable backend systems for modern digital applications. The successful candidate will contribute to system architecture, API development, database optimization, and service integration while ensuring that applications meet high standards of performance, availability, and maintainability.

Working alongside frontend engineers, product designers, QA specialists, and technical stakeholders, you will help transform product requirements into robust software solutions. This role is suited to an engineer who combines strong programming fundamentals with practical architectural judgment and a commitment to producing clean, well-tested code.

The position offers an opportunity to contribute to technically challenging projects within Estonia’s technology sector, supporting products that may serve customers across European and international markets.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain backend services, business logic, and application programming interfaces.

• Develop secure and efficient RESTful APIs and, where appropriate, GraphQL services for internal and external integrations.

• Implement reliable data-processing workflows and optimize database structures, queries, and transaction performance.

• Work with relational and NoSQL databases, selecting appropriate storage approaches based on application requirements.

• Apply authentication, authorization, encryption, and secure coding practices to protect application data.

• Collaborate with frontend and mobile developers to deliver consistent end-to-end application functionality.

• Write unit, integration, and automated tests to maintain software quality and reduce regression risks.

• Diagnose production issues, investigate system bottlenecks, and implement durable technical solutions.

• Contribute to code reviews, architectural discussions, technical documentation, and engineering standards.

• Support CI/CD pipelines, application monitoring, logging, and deployment processes in collaboration with DevOps engineers.

• Identify opportunities to simplify existing systems, improve maintainability, and reduce technical debt.

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or equivalent practical experience.

• At least 5 years of professional backend development experience.

• Strong proficiency in one or more backend languages, such as Java, Kotlin, Python, C#, Go, or TypeScript with Node.js.

• Practical experience designing APIs, distributed services, and database-driven applications.

• Good knowledge of PostgreSQL, MySQL, or comparable relational database systems; familiarity with Redis or document databases is beneficial.

• Understanding of software architecture, data structures, algorithms, concurrency, and application security.

• Experience with Git, automated testing, code review practices, and CI/CD workflows.

• Familiarity with Docker, cloud infrastructure, and production monitoring tools.

• Strong analytical, debugging, and problem-solving skills.

• Ability to communicate technical decisions clearly and collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team.

Technical Environment

The engineering environment may include Java, Kotlin, Python, Node.js, PostgreSQL, Redis, Docker, Kubernetes, AWS, Azure, or comparable technologies, depending on the product and project requirements.
