Position Summary

We are seeking a Backend Engineer to support the development of digital products by building reliable application services, integrating external systems, and improving the way information moves between software platforms.

The role will involve close collaboration with frontend developers, designers, product managers, and quality assurance specialists. You will help transform product requirements into functional backend capabilities, ensuring that applications communicate efficiently, handle data correctly, and provide a consistent user experience.

Key Duties

• Develop backend functionality for web applications, customer portals, and other digital products.

• Build and maintain RESTful APIs and, where appropriate, GraphQL interfaces.

• Integrate third-party services such as payment gateways, identity verification tools, notification platforms, and analytics services.

• Implement business logic, validation rules, and data-processing workflows.

• Develop and maintain database models that support evolving product requirements.

• Ensure that API responses, error handling, and service behaviour remain consistent and well documented.

• Work with frontend engineers to define API contracts and resolve integration issues.

• Apply appropriate authentication, authorisation, input validation, and protection against common application vulnerabilities.

• Write unit and integration tests and assist with investigating defects across development and production environments.

• Monitor service performance and contribute to improvements in response times, reliability, and maintainability.

• Participate in sprint planning, technical estimation, code reviews, and product delivery discussions.

Skills and Experience

• Relevant education in software development or equivalent practical experience.

• Experience developing backend applications using a modern programming language and framework.

• Understanding of HTTP, REST API design, JSON, and third-party service integration.

• Practical knowledge of PostgreSQL, MySQL, or another suitable database technology.

• Familiarity with Git, automated testing, debugging tools, and software development workflows.

• Knowledge of secure coding practices, API authentication, and sensitive-data handling.

• Ability to work effectively with frontend engineers and non-technical stakeholders.

• Strong attention to detail, structured problem-solving skills, and a commitment to code quality.

Candidates with experience in fintech, e-commerce, SaaS products, digital banking, or other API-driven platforms will be particularly relevant. Familiarity with payment workflows or identity verification integrations is advantageous but not essential.

The successful candidate will be comfortable working in an iterative development environment where requirements evolve and technical decisions must balance delivery speed with long-term maintainability. You should be able to explain technical trade-offs, identify integration risks early, and work collaboratively to resolve issues.
