Description
Company Overview
The organisation develops and operates digital applications that rely on dependable backend services, external integrations, and secure cloud-hosted environments. Its engineering teams work to ensure that application components communicate reliably, business workflows operate consistently, and technical changes can be delivered without compromising service quality.
The organisation values operational awareness, secure engineering practices, thoughtful system design, and clear collaboration between development and infrastructure functions. It encourages engineers to take responsibility for the quality of the services they build and to consider reliability, monitoring, deployment, and maintainability throughout the development lifecycle.
Role Summary
The Remote Backend Engineer — Cloud Services, Integration & Application Reliability will build and maintain backend services that support application functionality, integrate with external platforms, and operate within cloud-based environments. The role combines server-side development with API integration, service configuration, automated testing, monitoring, and troubleshooting.
The successful candidate will develop backend components, implement secure integration patterns, investigate service failures, and contribute to deployment and reliability improvements. They will collaborate with frontend developers, DevOps specialists, quality assurance teams, and product stakeholders to ensure that backend services meet functional and operational requirements.
This position is suited to a backend engineer who understands that production-ready software requires more than correct business logic. It also requires predictable error handling, useful monitoring, secure configuration, appropriate testing, and reliable deployment procedures.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain backend services and APIs that support digital products and communicate with internal or external systems.
- Build server-side applications using a suitable technology stack, such as Node.js with TypeScript, Python, Java, C#, Go, or comparable technologies.
- Implement REST APIs or other service interfaces with clear contracts, appropriate validation, consistent error responses, and suitable documentation.
- Integrate backend services with third-party platforms, authentication providers, business applications, and other authorised external systems.
- Develop robust integration workflows that account for network failures, timeouts, rate limits, invalid responses, and temporary service unavailability.
- Implement appropriate retry mechanisms, idempotency controls, and error-handling strategies where required to prevent duplicate or inconsistent processing.
- Develop asynchronous processing or background jobs for tasks that benefit from scheduled execution or processing outside the main request-response cycle.
- Apply secure coding practices, protect API credentials, and manage configuration through approved secure mechanisms rather than embedding secrets in source code.
- Collaborate with infrastructure and DevOps colleagues to support service deployment, environment configuration, containerisation, and automated release workflows.
- Contribute to CI/CD pipelines by maintaining automated checks, test execution, build validation, and deployment safeguards.
- Implement unit, integration, and service-level tests to validate backend functionality, integration behaviour, and critical application workflows.
- Monitor service logs, error rates, response times, and other relevant indicators to identify problems and support timely investigation.
- Investigate production defects, failed integrations, configuration issues, and performance degradation, documenting root causes and corrective actions.
- Improve backend performance by analysing resource consumption, inefficient queries, slow endpoints, and avoidable processing overhead.
- Support service reliability by identifying fragile dependencies, reviewing failure scenarios, and recommending practical resilience improvements.
- Maintain documentation for service dependencies, API usage, deployment requirements, environment variables, troubleshooting procedures, and recovery steps.
- Collaborate with frontend engineers to resolve API integration issues and ensure that backend changes remain compatible with user-facing application workflows.
- Work with quality assurance specialists to reproduce defects, verify fixes, and ensure that changes meet defined acceptance criteria.
- Participate in code reviews and technical discussions, contributing to consistent engineering standards and maintainable service architecture.
- Review external API changes and assess their potential effect on application functionality, service compatibility, and data processing.
- Identify opportunities to improve monitoring, automate routine technical checks, reduce repetitive operational work, and strengthen release processes.
- Participate in incident follow-ups and recommend engineering changes that reduce recurring service failures.
- Communicate implementation progress, technical dependencies, operational risks, and delivery concerns clearly within the distributed team.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Professional experience in backend engineering, server-side application development, API development, or a closely related software engineering role.
- Strong proficiency in at least one backend programming language, such as TypeScript/JavaScript, Python, Java, C#, or Go.
- Experience designing and maintaining APIs and integrating applications with external services.
- Good understanding of HTTP, REST principles, authentication, request validation, error handling, and service communication.
- Experience with relational databases and SQL; familiarity with caching, queues, or other supporting data technologies is advantageous.
- Understanding of secure application development, secrets management, access controls, and protection of sensitive data.
- Experience writing automated tests and working with Git-based code review processes.
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, Docker, cloud platforms, service monitoring, or application logging is beneficial.
- Understanding of deployment environments, configuration management, and the importance of keeping development and production settings appropriately separated.
- Ability to investigate service failures using logs, metrics, test results, and application code.
- Familiarity with asynchronous processing, retry strategies, idempotency, or other techniques used to make integrations more reliable is an advantage.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to distinguish application defects from integration, configuration, or infrastructure issues.
- Ability to maintain clear technical documentation and communicate effectively with engineering and non-engineering colleagues.
- Good organisational skills and the ability to manage development tasks independently in a remote setting.
- A degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related discipline is advantageous; equivalent practical experience is also valued.
- Professional proficiency in English is required; knowledge of Estonian is an advantage.
Benefits
- Fully remote working arrangement within Estonia.
- Full-time, permanent employment in a backend engineering role with exposure to cloud-based applications and service integrations.
- Opportunities to develop expertise in API engineering, cloud deployment, service monitoring, and application reliability.
- Collaboration with backend, frontend, quality assurance, and infrastructure professionals.
- Opportunities to improve engineering standards, automated testing, deployment workflows, and operational diagnostics.
- Professional development through technical discussions, code reviews, and practical problem-solving.
- A work environment that values secure development, technical ownership, dependable services, and continuous improvement.
Application Instructions
Applicants should submit an up-to-date CV outlining their backend engineering experience, programming languages, frameworks, and relevant integration or cloud-based projects. Highlight experience with API design, external service integration, automated testing, deployment workflows, and production troubleshooting.
Candidates may include a portfolio, Git repository, or project summaries demonstrating their engineering approach. Do not share proprietary code, private infrastructure details, access credentials, or confidential information from current or previous employers.
Applications will be assessed on backend development skills, integration knowledge, security awareness, debugging ability, and understanding of service reliability. Please apply through the official application channel associated with the vacancy and provide only information relevant to the recruitment process.
