Role Summary

The Remote Backend Engineer will design, develop, test, and maintain server-side applications, APIs, and backend services that support the organisation’s digital products. The successful candidate will implement business logic, manage data access, integrate with external systems, and ensure that backend functionality remains secure, maintainable, and efficient.

The role involves designing API endpoints, implementing validation and error-handling mechanisms, working with relational databases, and investigating issues that affect service availability or application performance. The engineer will also contribute to automated testing, code reviews, deployment processes, and technical documentation.

Working remotely within Estonia, the successful candidate will collaborate with a distributed engineering team, communicate technical decisions clearly, and manage assigned development tasks with appropriate independence. This position is suited to a backend professional who enjoys solving complex application problems and building services that provide a reliable foundation for user-facing products.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain backend services and application components using suitable server-side technologies, such as Node.js with TypeScript, Python, Java, C#, Go, or comparable languages.
• Build and maintain REST APIs or GraphQL services that enable reliable communication between frontend applications, internal systems, and approved external platforms.
• Translate product requirements and technical specifications into maintainable backend implementations with clearly defined interfaces and responsibilities.
• Implement business logic, validation rules, data transformations, and processing workflows that support core application functionality.
• Design and maintain database schemas, queries, indexes, and data-access patterns using relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL, as appropriate to the application.
• Ensure that API requests and responses follow consistent structures, with appropriate status codes, validation messages, and error-handling behaviour.
• Implement authentication and authorisation controls, ensuring that backend operations respect user permissions and application security requirements.
• Integrate backend services with third-party APIs, internal business systems, and other services required by product functionality.
• Write unit, integration, and service-level tests to validate business logic, API behaviour, database interactions, and critical application workflows.
• Participate in code reviews and technical design discussions, providing constructive feedback and applying established coding standards.
• Investigate and resolve backend defects, unexpected application behaviour, failed integrations, and data-processing errors.
• Analyse application performance and improve slow database queries, inefficient processing routines, excessive network requests, and other sources of latency.
• Apply secure coding practices to prevent common vulnerabilities, protect sensitive information, and maintain appropriate controls over application data.
• Maintain technical documentation covering API contracts, service dependencies, database structures, configuration requirements, and important implementation decisions.
• Collaborate with frontend engineers to coordinate API changes, clarify data requirements, and resolve issues affecting end-to-end functionality.
• Work with DevOps or infrastructure colleagues to support deployment activities, configuration management, service monitoring, and production troubleshooting.
• Contribute to continuous integration and deployment workflows by maintaining automated tests, build checks, and release validation procedures.
• Monitor service logs, error reports, and relevant performance metrics to identify recurring problems and opportunities for improvement.
• Review existing backend code to identify technical debt, duplicated logic, unnecessary complexity, and opportunities to improve maintainability.
• Participate in sprint planning, estimation, retrospectives, and other engineering activities within a distributed team.
• Communicate progress, technical dependencies, implementation risks, and delivery concerns clearly to relevant stakeholders.

Requirements and Qualifications

• Professional experience in backend engineering, server-side development, API development, or a related software engineering role.
• Strong programming skills in at least one backend language, such as TypeScript/JavaScript, Python, Java, C#, or Go.
• Practical experience designing, implementing, and maintaining APIs for production applications.
• Good understanding of HTTP, REST principles, JSON, request validation, error handling, and service-to-service communication.
• Experience working with relational databases, SQL queries, data modelling, and database performance considerations.
• Familiarity with authentication, authorisation, secure configuration, input validation, and common application security principles.
• Experience writing automated tests and maintaining code quality through code reviews and version control.
• Proficiency with Git and collaborative development workflows, including branching, pull requests, and release management.
• Understanding of application architecture, modular design, separation of concerns, and maintainable software development practices.
• Ability to investigate technical problems systematically and identify root causes rather than relying only on temporary fixes.
• Familiarity with Docker, cloud-hosted applications, CI/CD pipelines, or application monitoring tools is an advantage.
• Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and the ability to evaluate technical trade-offs.
• Good written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with distributed engineering teams.
• Ability to organise development tasks independently and maintain progress against agreed delivery timelines.
• A degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related discipline is advantageous; equivalent practical experience is also valued.
• Professional proficiency in English is required; knowledge of Estonian is an advantage.
