We are looking for an experienced Senior Backend Engineer who can contribute to architectural decisions, improve system resilience, and lead the development of critical backend components.

About the Role

As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will take technical ownership of backend services that support high-volume payment workflows and banking operations. You will design distributed services, improve performance and reliability, and help establish engineering standards for production-critical systems.

You will collaborate with engineering leadership, product teams, security specialists, and infrastructure engineers to translate business requirements into robust technical solutions. You will also mentor colleagues, review complex implementations, and help the team make sound architectural decisions.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and develop scalable backend services for payment processing, banking workflows, and financial transaction management.
• Define service boundaries, API contracts, data models, and integration patterns for distributed applications.
• Improve transaction reliability through idempotent processing, controlled retries, fault isolation, and appropriate consistency mechanisms.
• Design asynchronous workflows and event-driven services using suitable messaging and streaming technologies.
• Optimise database schemas, queries, indexing strategies, and transaction handling for performance and data integrity.
• Establish observability practices through structured logging, metrics, distributed tracing, and actionable alerting.
• Lead technical investigations into production incidents, performance bottlenecks, and complex system failures.
• Contribute to service availability, disaster recovery, capacity planning, and operational resilience.
• Work with platform and DevOps teams to improve automated deployments, infrastructure management, and release safety.
• Conduct code reviews, mentor engineers, and promote maintainable software architecture.
• Collaborate with security teams to implement appropriate authentication, authorisation, encryption, and secrets management.
• Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend improvements to the backend engineering platform.
• Contribute to technical roadmaps and help balance delivery speed, reliability, security, and long-term maintainability.

Requirements and Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
• Significant professional experience building and operating production backend systems.
• Strong proficiency in at least one backend language, such as Java, Kotlin, Go, C#, or Python.
• Experience designing distributed systems, microservices, and event-driven architectures.
• Strong understanding of database transactions, concurrency, consistency, and failure recovery.
• Practical experience with relational databases, caching technologies, and message brokers.
• Experience operating services in cloud environments and working with containers and orchestration platforms.
• Strong knowledge of automated testing, CI/CD, code review, and software delivery practices.
• Familiarity with production observability, incident management, and performance optimisation.
• Understanding of secure software development and the protection of sensitive financial information.
• Excellent technical communication skills and the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
• Professional proficiency in English; Estonian language skills are an advantage.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience building high-throughput payment systems, banking platforms, or other transaction-intensive applications.
• Knowledge of financial messaging standards, SEPA payment workflows, or ISO 20022 concepts.
• Experience with Kubernetes, Terraform, and cloud infrastructure automation.
• Familiarity with PCI DSS, secure payment architecture, or relevant financial sector security controls.
• Experience improving service-level objectives, operational resilience, and disaster recovery procedures.
• Previous experience mentoring engineers or leading technical design initiatives.
