As our platform expands, we are seeking a Backend Engineer to strengthen our integration capabilities and develop services that simplify how applications communicate with banks and financial service providers.

Position Overview

In this role, you will build backend services that integrate with banking systems, external financial APIs, and third-party service providers. You will help manage differences between external API specifications, handle asynchronous responses, and ensure that financial data is processed accurately and securely.

You will work closely with engineering, product, and compliance teams to develop maintainable integrations that support dependable financial workflows across multiple providers.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and implement backend services that connect internal applications with banking APIs and third-party financial platforms.
• Develop and maintain RESTful APIs, integration adapters, and reusable service components.
• Implement secure authentication and authorisation mechanisms, including OAuth 2.0 where appropriate.
• Handle external API failures, rate limits, timeouts, retries, and inconsistent response formats.
• Build validation and normalisation services for financial data received from external systems.
• Develop asynchronous processing workflows for banking events, payment notifications, and account data updates.
• Implement appropriate logging, monitoring, and alerting for integration failures and degraded service performance.
• Collaborate with security and compliance stakeholders to support data protection and access-control requirements.
• Write automated tests for API integrations, data transformations, and failure scenarios.
• Maintain technical documentation, integration specifications, and operational runbooks.
• Investigate production issues involving connectivity, authentication, data quality, and third-party service availability.
• Participate in architecture reviews and help improve the scalability and maintainability of the integration platform.

Requirements and Qualifications

• Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or equivalent professional experience.
• Experience developing backend services using Java, Kotlin, C#, Python, Go, or TypeScript/Node.js.
• Strong knowledge of REST APIs, JSON, HTTP, and API versioning.
• Practical experience integrating with external services and troubleshooting API-related problems.
• Understanding of authentication, authorisation, OAuth 2.0, and secure credential management.
• Experience working with SQL databases and structured financial or business data.
• Familiarity with asynchronous processing, event-driven architecture, or message queues.
• Knowledge of software testing, code review practices, and CI/CD workflows.
• Strong attention to detail and the ability to investigate complex integration issues.
• Excellent communication skills in English; Estonian language proficiency is beneficial.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with open banking, PSD2-related integrations, SEPA payment services, or bank connectivity platforms.
• Familiarity with ISO 20022 financial messaging concepts.
• Experience with Kafka, RabbitMQ, Redis, or similar infrastructure components.
• Knowledge of cloud-based application development and containerisation.
• Understanding of GDPR and the secure handling of financial and personal data.
