Description
Position Summary
We are seeking a technically proficient Fintech Open Banking Integration Engineer to develop and maintain secure connections between financial institutions, payment service providers, and digital financial applications. This role focuses on building dependable API integrations that enable authorised access to financial information, account connectivity, payment initiation, and seamless data exchange across interconnected financial systems.
The successful candidate will contribute to the engineering of integration services that support modern banking experiences, business payment workflows, account aggregation, and embedded financial products. Working alongside backend engineers, product teams, information security specialists, and compliance professionals, the engineer will help ensure that integrations remain reliable, secure, and maintainable as platform requirements evolve.
This opportunity is suited to a software engineer with strong API development skills, an understanding of financial systems, and an interest in building technology that connects traditional banking infrastructure with innovative digital services.
Key Responsibilities
-
API Integration Development: Design, implement, and maintain integrations with bank APIs, account information services, payment initiation services, and third-party financial platforms.
-
Open Banking Connectivity: Develop integration workflows that support authorised account access, balance retrieval, transaction history synchronisation, and payment-related functionality.
-
Secure Authentication: Implement appropriate authentication and authorisation flows, including OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, token management, and certificate-based security where required.
-
Data Transformation: Build reliable processes for mapping and normalising financial data from different providers into consistent internal data models.
-
Payment Workflow Engineering: Support the development of payment initiation, payment-status tracking, transaction confirmation, and exception-handling processes.
-
Reliability and Resilience: Implement timeouts, retries, idempotency controls, error handling, and circuit-breaking mechanisms to improve integration stability.
-
API Monitoring: Develop monitoring and alerting for service availability, response times, authentication failures, provider outages, and unsuccessful transactions.
-
Testing and Validation: Create automated unit, integration, and contract tests to verify that integrations behave correctly across different provider environments.
-
Documentation: Maintain API specifications, integration guides, technical diagrams, configuration instructions, and troubleshooting procedures.
-
Security and Compliance Collaboration: Work with security and compliance teams to support secure data processing and applicable European open banking requirements.
-
Production Support: Investigate integration incidents, trace failures across connected services, and implement corrective measures to prevent recurring issues.
-
Engineering Improvement: Evaluate new API capabilities, provider updates, and integration patterns that could improve platform functionality and maintainability.
Qualifications and Experience
Candidates should demonstrate strong software engineering fundamentals and practical experience building or maintaining production-grade integrations.
Essential requirements:
-
A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
-
At least three years of professional software development experience, including substantial work with APIs or distributed applications.
-
Proficiency in at least one backend programming language, such as Java, Kotlin, Python, C#, Go, or TypeScript.
-
Strong understanding of REST APIs, HTTP, JSON, API versioning, and structured error handling.
-
Practical knowledge of authentication, authorisation, access tokens, and secure handling of credentials.
-
Experience working with relational databases and integrating data across multiple systems.
-
Understanding of asynchronous processing, webhooks, and event-driven integration patterns.
-
Familiarity with automated testing, version control, CI/CD pipelines, and production troubleshooting.
-
Ability to produce clear technical documentation and collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
Previous experience with banking APIs or financial services integrations is highly desirable.
Technical Environment
The engineering environment may include the following technologies and practices:
-
Programming: Java, Kotlin, Python, Go, C#, or TypeScript.
-
API technologies: REST, OpenAPI, OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, webhooks, and API gateways.
-
Financial connectivity: Open banking APIs, account information services, payment initiation interfaces, and banking data standards.
-
Data infrastructure: PostgreSQL, Redis, message queues, and event-streaming platforms.
-
Cloud and deployment: AWS, Azure, Docker, Kubernetes, and automated deployment pipelines.
-
Observability: Centralised logging, distributed tracing, metrics, and incident alerting.
-
Quality assurance: Unit testing, integration testing, contract testing, and automated regression testing.
Experience with European open banking standards, including Berlin Group NextGenPSD2 or relevant provider-specific implementations, would be an advantage.
Security and Regulatory Considerations
Because the role involves financial information and potentially payment initiation, the engineer must prioritise secure system design and careful data handling.
The successful candidate will help implement least-privilege access, secure credential storage, appropriate encryption, auditable transaction workflows, and robust consent-related controls. They will also collaborate with relevant specialists to ensure that technical implementations align with applicable requirements, including GDPR and relevant European payment-services rules.
The position does not independently determine regulatory compliance; instead, it translates approved security and compliance requirements into dependable engineering solutions.
First Six Months: Expected Outcomes
During the initial six months, the successful candidate should aim to:
-
Become familiar with the existing integration architecture and provider ecosystem.
-
Deliver or improve at least one significant banking or financial API integration.
-
Strengthen automated testing and error-handling mechanisms for critical integration workflows.
-
Improve monitoring and troubleshooting for provider connectivity and transaction failures.
-
Produce clear documentation for supported integrations and recurring operational issues.
-
Contribute to measurable improvements in integration reliability and incident resolution.
Performance will be assessed through integration stability, implementation quality, test coverage, maintainability, security practices, and the effectiveness of production issue resolution.
Professional Attributes
The ideal candidate is systematic, technically curious, and comfortable diagnosing complex problems that cross organisational and system boundaries. They should understand that financial integrations require more than successful API calls: they must also account for duplicate requests, inconsistent provider responses, delayed confirmations, partial failures, and the safe recovery of interrupted transactions.
Strong communication skills, attention to detail, and a willingness to collaborate across engineering, product, and compliance functions are essential.
Why This Opportunity?
This position offers the opportunity to contribute to the infrastructure connecting Estonia’s digital financial ecosystem with modern banking and payment services. The engineer will work on practical integration challenges that enable businesses and consumers to access financial functionality through connected applications.
The role provides opportunities to deepen expertise in financial APIs, distributed systems, secure authentication, payment workflows, and European open banking technology, with potential progression into senior integration engineering, financial platform engineering, or API architecture.
Ideal candidate: A backend-oriented engineer who combines strong API development skills, security-conscious engineering practices, and a practical understanding of financial workflows to build dependable connections between banking institutions and fintech applications.
