Description
Position Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented Fintech Data Governance Specialist to establish and maintain reliable data governance practices across financial technology systems. This role focuses on improving data quality, defining ownership and accountability, maintaining consistent data standards, and ensuring that financial and operational information is managed appropriately throughout its lifecycle.
As fintech platforms increasingly depend on interconnected systems, accurate and well-governed data is essential for transaction processing, financial reporting, customer management, risk assessment, and regulatory obligations. The successful candidate will work with data engineers, compliance professionals, product teams, and business stakeholders to ensure that information is properly classified, documented, validated, and accessible to authorised users.
This position is suited to a professional who combines analytical thinking with an understanding of financial data, information management, and operational controls. The role is primarily specialist-focused, with an emphasis on developing practical governance frameworks rather than managing a large team.
Key Responsibilities
-
Data Governance Frameworks: Develop and maintain policies, standards, and procedures governing the collection, storage, classification, use, and retention of financial and operational data.
-
Data Quality Management: Establish validation rules, quality indicators, and monitoring procedures to identify incomplete, duplicated, inconsistent, or inaccurate records.
-
Data Ownership and Accountability: Work with business departments to define data owners, custodians, responsibilities, and approval processes for critical information assets.
-
Data Classification: Maintain classification standards for customer information, transaction records, financial reports, reference data, and other sensitive business information.
-
Metadata and Data Cataloguing: Document data definitions, business terminology, source systems, lineage, and relationships between important financial datasets.
-
Regulatory Support: Assist relevant teams in maintaining data practices consistent with applicable GDPR obligations, financial-sector requirements, and internal compliance policies.
-
Data Lineage and Traceability: Help establish clear records of how data moves between systems, where transformations occur, and how reported figures can be traced to their sources.
-
Access Governance: Collaborate with information security teams to support appropriate access permissions, periodic access reviews, and controls for sensitive financial data.
-
Issue Resolution: Investigate recurring data-quality problems, coordinate remediation activities, and document root causes and corrective measures.
-
Process Documentation: Maintain governance procedures, control records, data dictionaries, issue logs, and evidence required for internal reviews or audits.
-
Stakeholder Engagement: Translate governance requirements into practical guidance that technical teams and business users can apply consistently.
-
Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities to automate data-quality checks, strengthen governance monitoring, and reduce inconsistent handling of information across platforms.
Qualifications and Professional Experience
Candidates should have experience working with structured information, business processes, data controls, or information management within a technology-driven organisation.
Essential requirements:
-
A bachelor’s degree in Information Management, Computer Science, Business Information Systems, Data Analytics, Finance, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
-
At least three years of relevant experience in data governance, data quality, information management, business analysis, or data operations.
-
Understanding of data lifecycle management, metadata, data ownership, information classification, and quality-control practices.
-
Familiarity with relational databases and the principles of structured data management.
-
Ability to document policies, business definitions, process flows, and operational control procedures.
-
Strong analytical skills and the ability to investigate data inconsistencies systematically.
-
Understanding of confidentiality, access control, and responsible handling of sensitive customer and financial information.
-
Excellent written communication skills and the ability to work with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
-
A methodical approach to documentation, problem-solving, and follow-through.
Technical Skills and Tools
Experience with the following tools and concepts would be advantageous:
-
Data querying: SQL for validating datasets and investigating inconsistencies.
-
Data visualisation: Power BI, Tableau, or comparable reporting tools for presenting data-quality indicators.
-
Governance platforms: Data catalogues, metadata repositories, business glossaries, and data-quality management tools.
-
Data architecture: Relational databases, data warehouses, data pipelines, and basic data lineage concepts.
-
Workflow documentation: Microsoft Visio, Lucidchart, Confluence, or equivalent documentation platforms.
-
Information security: Role-based access control, data classification, retention policies, and audit trails.
-
Regulatory knowledge: GDPR, data minimisation, purpose limitation, and appropriate retention of personal information.
Knowledge of data governance frameworks such as DAMA-DMBOK, as well as experience with cloud-based data platforms, would be an additional advantage.
Key Deliverables and Performance Expectations
During the first six months, the successful candidate is expected to develop a practical understanding of the organisation’s critical data assets and contribute to measurable improvements in data governance.
Key deliverables may include:
-
A documented inventory of priority financial and operational datasets.
-
Standardised definitions for important business and financial data elements.
-
Data-quality rules and reporting for selected critical datasets.
-
Clear ownership and accountability records for governed information assets.
-
Improved documentation of data lineage and system-to-system data flows.
-
A structured process for recording, prioritising, and resolving data-quality issues.
-
Evidence of improved consistency in data handling and governance compliance.
Performance will be assessed through data-quality improvements, completeness of governance documentation, resolution of recurring data issues, stakeholder adoption of standards, and the effectiveness of established controls.
Collaboration and Working Environment
The specialist will collaborate with data engineering, software development, information security, compliance, finance, and product teams. The role requires the ability to establish common standards across departments without unnecessarily slowing down product development or routine financial operations.
The successful candidate should be comfortable balancing governance requirements with practical business needs, using clear documentation and evidence-based recommendations to support consistent decisions.
Professional fluency in English is important for cross-functional collaboration. Knowledge of Estonian or another European language may be beneficial, depending on the organisation’s client base and operating environment.
Why This Opportunity?
This role offers the opportunity to influence the quality and reliability of data that supports modern financial services. By improving how financial information is defined, documented, controlled, and maintained, the specialist will help strengthen operational confidence, support regulatory readiness, and improve the foundation for analytics and automation.
The position also provides a pathway toward advanced roles in data governance, financial data management, information architecture, data risk, or enterprise data strategy.
Ideal candidate: A structured and analytical data professional who understands that effective governance depends on clear standards, accountable ownership, reliable controls, and practical collaboration across the fintech organisation.
