Description
Company Overview
The organisation operates in the fintech and digital payments environment, where dependable technology services are fundamental to customer experience, transaction processing, and business continuity. Financial applications must remain responsive, observable, and resilient while handling changing workloads, third-party dependencies, and operational incidents.
Maintaining service reliability requires more than responding to failures after they occur. It involves defining measurable service objectives, identifying emerging risks, automating repetitive operational work, and continuously improving the architecture and procedures used to operate production systems.
The organisation is seeking a Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) to help strengthen the availability, performance, and resilience of its technology platforms. The successful candidate will contribute to a proactive reliability culture in which operational data, incident learning, automation, and engineering discipline guide platform improvements.
Role Summary
The Site Reliability Engineer will work at the intersection of software engineering, infrastructure operations, observability, and production reliability. The position focuses on keeping critical services stable while enabling engineering teams to release improvements efficiently and safely.
The role involves defining and monitoring service-level indicators (SLIs), supporting service-level objectives (SLOs), analysing system performance, investigating production incidents, and improving automated responses to recurring operational problems. The engineer will collaborate with application developers, DevOps engineers, platform teams, and security specialists to reduce service disruption and improve recovery capabilities.
A major part of the position will involve understanding how application components, databases, APIs, network connections, cloud infrastructure, and external providers interact under real operating conditions. The successful candidate must be able to use evidence from metrics, logs, traces, and incident records to identify weaknesses and recommend practical solutions.
This position is appropriate for an engineer who combines strong troubleshooting skills with a structured approach to reliability, automation, and continuous service improvement.
Key Responsibilities
-
Service reliability objectives: Define, monitor, and maintain SLIs and SLOs for important services, ensuring that availability, latency, error rates, and other reliability indicators are measurable and actionable.
-
Observability engineering: Build and improve monitoring systems, dashboards, log collection, distributed tracing, and alerting to provide accurate visibility into service behaviour.
-
Production incident response: Investigate service interruptions, performance degradation, deployment-related failures, and infrastructure incidents, coordinating recovery activities with the appropriate technical teams.
-
Root-cause analysis: Conduct structured post-incident reviews, identify contributing technical and procedural factors, and track corrective actions that prevent repeated failures.
-
Performance engineering: Analyse latency, throughput, resource utilisation, queue processing, database performance, and API behaviour to identify bottlenecks and opportunities for optimisation.
-
Reliability automation: Develop scripts, tools, and automated workflows that reduce manual intervention during routine operations, incident handling, system maintenance, and service recovery.
-
Capacity planning: Assess historical usage patterns and projected workloads to help determine infrastructure capacity requirements and identify potential resource constraints before they affect users.
-
Resilience testing: Support failover testing, recovery exercises, dependency failure simulations, and other controlled activities designed to validate service resilience.
-
Release reliability: Collaborate with delivery teams to improve deployment safety through progressive rollouts, health checks, automated rollback mechanisms, and post-deployment verification.
-
Error-budget management: Help teams use reliability measurements to make informed decisions about release frequency, technical debt, operational risk, and service improvement priorities.
-
Platform dependency analysis: Evaluate how databases, message queues, APIs, identity services, cloud services, and external payment providers affect the reliability of critical applications.
-
Operational readiness: Review service documentation, monitoring coverage, recovery procedures, escalation paths, and support requirements before new services enter production.
-
Infrastructure collaboration: Work with DevOps and platform engineers to improve provisioning, configuration consistency, deployment automation, and infrastructure resilience.
-
Security and access controls: Support reliable and secure operations by following access-management standards, protecting operational credentials, and coordinating remediation of infrastructure vulnerabilities.
-
Knowledge sharing: Document incident findings, operational procedures, reliability patterns, and troubleshooting methods to improve consistency across distributed engineering teams.
Requirements and Qualifications
-
Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
-
Relevant experience in site reliability engineering, production engineering, infrastructure operations, DevOps, or backend systems engineering.
-
Strong understanding of distributed systems, service dependencies, failure modes, and production application behaviour.
-
Experience using observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, Datadog, New Relic, or comparable platforms.
-
Practical knowledge of Linux, TCP/IP networking, DNS, HTTP, TLS, load balancing, and common infrastructure troubleshooting techniques.
-
Experience with at least one major cloud platform and a clear understanding of cloud service availability, scaling, and failure recovery.
-
Familiarity with Kubernetes, containerised applications, service orchestration, or comparable production deployment technologies.
-
Scripting or programming ability in Python, Go, Bash, or another suitable language for automation and operational tooling.
-
Understanding of CI/CD processes, version control, deployment strategies, and the operational implications of software releases.
-
Experience investigating latency, resource exhaustion, application errors, database performance issues, or distributed-service failures.
-
Knowledge of incident management, escalation procedures, post-incident reviews, and corrective-action tracking.
-
Familiarity with backup strategies, disaster recovery, redundancy, failover mechanisms, and business continuity principles.
-
Ability to interpret monitoring data and convert technical observations into prioritised reliability improvements.
-
Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate calmly and effectively during high-pressure incidents.
-
A disciplined approach to documentation, operational handovers, and continuous improvement in a remote team environment.
Benefits
-
Remote working opportunities within Estonia, subject to applicable employment arrangements.
-
Direct involvement in improving the reliability of financial technology and payment-related services.
-
Opportunities to work with observability platforms, distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, and automated incident-response practices.
-
Collaboration with engineering teams focused on platform performance, system resilience, and operational excellence.
-
Professional development in reliability engineering, performance analysis, incident management, and cloud operations.
-
Opportunities to influence engineering standards and introduce improvements based on measurable service outcomes.
-
A collaborative environment that values clear documentation, knowledge sharing, and constructive post-incident learning.
-
Exposure to real-world challenges involving service availability, infrastructure scaling, external dependencies, and production stability.
Application Instructions
Interested candidates should submit a current CV through the relevant recruitment platform or official hiring channel associated with the vacancy.
