Description

Company Overview

The organisation operates in the fintech sector, where dependable technology infrastructure is essential to the delivery of digital financial products and services. Its technical environment may support transaction processing, payment integrations, customer account services, internal APIs, and other applications that require consistent availability, reliable data processing, and controlled deployment practices.

The Infrastructure Engineering & Site Reliability department focuses on keeping applications and supporting platforms stable, observable, scalable, and recoverable. Its work combines software automation, infrastructure management, performance analysis, incident response, and operational improvement. The team collaborates with developers and product stakeholders to identify reliability risks and reduce the operational burden associated with running complex distributed systems.

The organisation values proactive monitoring, systematic incident investigation, effective automation, and clear operational ownership. This remote opportunity is suited to an engineer who enjoys solving complex production problems and building the systems and practices needed to maintain dependable financial technology services.

Role Summary

The Site Reliability Engineer will improve the availability, performance, scalability, and operational resilience of infrastructure supporting financial technology applications. The position combines software engineering, systems administration, cloud infrastructure, observability, automation, and incident management.

Working closely with platform engineers, backend developers, security specialists, and product teams, the engineer will identify reliability bottlenecks, develop automated operational tools, improve monitoring, and support safe application releases. The role also includes defining and reviewing service-level indicators and objectives, conducting incident analysis, and helping teams prioritise reliability improvements based on measurable evidence.

Because payment-related systems can involve multiple services and external dependencies, the successful candidate must understand how failures propagate across distributed environments. The engineer will help strengthen fault tolerance, improve recovery procedures, and ensure that operational issues are detected and addressed before they cause unnecessary disruption.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, operate, and improve reliable infrastructure supporting payment platforms, backend services, APIs, and other business-critical financial applications.

  • Establish and maintain service-level indicators and service-level objectives for availability, latency, error rates, and other relevant reliability measures.

  • Develop monitoring, alerting, logging, and distributed tracing capabilities to improve visibility into application and infrastructure performance.

  • Automate repetitive operational tasks through Python, Go, Bash, or other suitable programming and scripting languages.

  • Maintain cloud infrastructure and container platforms, including Kubernetes, Docker, and related deployment technologies where applicable.

  • Collaborate with software engineers to identify reliability weaknesses in application architecture, service dependencies, resource utilisation, and deployment practices.

  • Investigate production incidents, coordinate technical troubleshooting, and help restore services in accordance with established operational procedures.

  • Conduct root cause analysis following significant incidents and document corrective actions that address underlying technical or process weaknesses.

  • Improve fault tolerance through appropriate redundancy, health checks, graceful degradation, retry strategies, circuit breakers, and recovery mechanisms.

  • Develop and maintain infrastructure automation, deployment scripts, operational runbooks, and repeatable environment configuration.

  • Support CI/CD improvements that enable safe releases, automated validation, controlled rollbacks, and reduced deployment-related failures.

  • Analyse service performance and capacity trends to identify bottlenecks, resource constraints, and potential scaling requirements.

  • Support disaster recovery planning and testing, including recovery procedures for critical services and their supporting dependencies.

  • Work with security teams to ensure that reliability improvements preserve appropriate access controls, secure configurations, and auditability.

  • Review operational alerts and incident trends to identify noisy monitoring, recurring failures, and opportunities to improve detection accuracy.

  • Help engineering teams reduce operational toil by improving self-service tooling, standardising common procedures, and automating routine maintenance.

  • Evaluate infrastructure costs and resource utilisation, recommending changes that improve efficiency without undermining reliability.

  • Maintain accurate documentation covering service dependencies, architecture, alert response, escalation paths, and recovery procedures.

  • Participate in an appropriate incident response rotation if required by the role, with clear escalation procedures and sustainable workload expectations.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.

  • Professional experience in site reliability engineering, DevOps, platform engineering, production operations, or infrastructure engineering.

  • Strong knowledge of Linux systems, networking fundamentals, DNS, TLS, HTTP, and troubleshooting distributed applications.

  • Experience operating cloud infrastructure on AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform, or a comparable environment.

  • Practical knowledge of containers, Kubernetes, infrastructure as code, and automated deployment workflows.

  • Proficiency in at least one programming or scripting language, such as Python, Go, Bash, or similar.

  • Experience with observability tools and practices covering metrics, logs, traces, alerting, and performance analysis.

  • Understanding of reliability engineering concepts, including service-level indicators, service-level objectives, error budgets, incident management, and root cause analysis.

  • Experience improving application resilience, capacity planning, service recovery, or production deployment reliability.

  • Familiarity with CI/CD systems such as GitHub Actions, GitLab CI/CD, Jenkins, or equivalent tools.

  • Ability to investigate complex technical issues methodically and communicate findings clearly during and after incidents.

  • Understanding of backup procedures, disaster recovery, high availability, and business continuity requirements.

  • Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work with developers, security specialists, and business stakeholders.

  • Experience supporting payment systems, digital banking, transaction platforms, or other high-availability financial services is an advantage.

  • Relevant cloud, Kubernetes, DevOps, or reliability engineering certifications are beneficial but not essential.

Benefits

  • Remote working opportunities within Estonia, subject to applicable employment arrangements.

  • Opportunity to improve the reliability of financial technology infrastructure and business-critical services.

  • Collaboration with experienced software, platform, security, and infrastructure professionals.

  • Opportunities to develop expertise in distributed systems, automation, cloud operations, and reliability engineering.

  • Access to technical training, knowledge-sharing, and relevant certification opportunities.

  • A culture that values automation, measurable service performance, constructive incident reviews, and sustainable operations.

  • The opportunity to reduce operational risk, improve platform availability, and strengthen service recovery capabilities.

Application Instructions

Interested candidates should submit an up-to-date CV describing their experience with production infrastructure, cloud platforms, automation, monitoring, and incident management. Applicants are encouraged to highlight a reliability improvement or significant production issue they helped resolve, outlining the investigation, corrective actions, and resulting improvements.

Applications should be submitted through the relevant recruitment platform or official hiring channel associated with the vacancy. Shortlisted candidates may participate in technical interviews covering systems troubleshooting, cloud architecture, observability, automation, incident response, and service reliability.
