Principal Digital Payments Architect

Shape the Architecture of Next-Generation Payment Technology

A technology-led fintech organization in Estonia is looking for a highly experienced Principal Digital Payments Architect to define the architecture of advanced payment platforms serving customers, merchants, financial institutions, and technology partners.

This is a principal-level position for an architecture leader with deep knowledge of payment processing, transaction orchestration, financial integrations, distributed systems, and payment security. You will influence the technical direction of payment products from strategic design through implementation and long-term evolution.

Key Responsibilities

• Define the target architecture for scalable digital payment platforms and transaction services.
• Design payment-processing capabilities covering authorization, routing, capture, refunds, reversals, settlement, and reconciliation.
• Establish architectures supporting multiple payment methods, financial partners, and transaction channels.
• Design resilient integration patterns for banks, payment providers, card networks, and financial infrastructure.
• Develop architectural strategies for high availability, fault tolerance, transaction consistency, and recovery.
• Establish standards for payment APIs, event-driven processing, service communication, and financial data flows.
• Collaborate with cybersecurity teams to incorporate strong payment-security and data-protection controls.
• Work closely with product and engineering leaders to translate payment strategies into technical roadmaps.
• Review major technical designs and identify scalability, reliability, security, and integration risks.
• Lead modernization initiatives across payment infrastructure and legacy transaction systems.
• Evaluate emerging payment technologies and determine their strategic relevance.
• Mentor senior architects and engineers while establishing long-term architectural standards.

What You Bring

• 10+ years of experience in software architecture, payments technology, fintech engineering, or financial infrastructure.
• Deep experience designing complex payment or transaction-processing platforms.
• Strong understanding of payment lifecycles, settlement, reconciliation, transaction states, and financial data integrity.
• Extensive knowledge of distributed systems, microservices, event-driven architectures, APIs, and databases.
• Experience with cloud-native platforms, Kubernetes, infrastructure automation, and production observability.
• Strong understanding of payment security, authentication, authorization, encryption, and sensitive-data management.
• Experience integrating with banks, payment service providers, card networks, or other financial infrastructure.
• Exceptional architectural judgment and technical leadership capabilities.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence senior technical and business stakeholders.

Technical Environment

The architecture landscape may include Kubernetes, Kafka, PostgreSQL, Redis, cloud platforms, payment gateways, REST/gRPC APIs, event-streaming infrastructure, API gateways, service meshes, Terraform, and distributed-observability platforms.
