Description
Company Overview
The organisation operates in the financial technology and digital payments industry, supporting payment flows between customers, merchants, financial institutions, and payment service providers. Reliable settlement processes are central to its operations, ensuring that transaction values are accounted for correctly and that funds move through the appropriate channels in accordance with agreed processing schedules.
The payments and financial control teams work together to maintain transparent financial records, monitor settlement performance, investigate discrepancies, and strengthen operational controls. The organisation places importance on accuracy, accountability, clear reporting, and the effective coordination of payment activities across different systems and partners.
Role Summary
The Payment Settlement Analyst will be responsible for monitoring settlement activity, validating settlement data, reconciling financial balances, and investigating discrepancies between internal payment records and external financial reports. The position focuses on ensuring that processed transactions are reflected correctly in settlement calculations and that outstanding differences are identified, documented, and resolved within agreed timelines.
The role requires a methodical approach to financial data, strong analytical skills, and the ability to coordinate with banking partners, payment processors, finance teams, and technical stakeholders. The successful candidate will contribute to settlement accuracy, timely exception resolution, and the maintenance of effective controls across payment operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor daily and periodic settlement activity across supported payment methods, currencies, payment processors, and banking relationships.
- Validate settlement reports against internal transaction ledgers, payment processing records, fee schedules, and relevant bank statements.
- Perform settlement reconciliations to confirm that transaction values, fees, refunds, chargebacks, adjustments, and net settlement amounts are correctly reflected.
- Investigate differences between expected and actual settlement values, including timing differences, missing transactions, duplicated entries, incorrect fees, and incomplete settlement files.
- Maintain a structured register of unresolved settlement discrepancies, including values, transaction references, responsible parties, investigation notes, and expected resolution dates.
- Coordinate with finance and treasury colleagues to confirm settlement balances and ensure that relevant accounting records are updated accurately.
- Liaise with acquiring banks, payment service providers, processors, and other external partners to obtain clarification on delayed or incorrect settlements.
- Track settlement deadlines and identify potential delays that may affect liquidity planning, financial reporting, or operational service levels.
- Review payment processor fees, commissions, interchange-related charges where applicable, and other settlement adjustments against contractual terms or approved fee schedules.
- Support month-end and period-end close activities by preparing reconciliation evidence, explaining outstanding balances, and documenting unresolved items.
- Analyse settlement trends to identify recurring discrepancies, unusual movements, operational bottlenecks, or provider-specific processing issues.
- Prepare regular reports covering settlement completion, unreconciled balances, outstanding exceptions, ageing discrepancies, and settlement performance.
- Maintain audit-ready supporting documentation for settlement reconciliations, adjustments, approvals, and investigation outcomes.
- Work with technical teams to investigate data mapping issues, file transmission errors, reporting inconsistencies, and integration problems affecting settlement calculations.
- Support the testing and implementation of changes to settlement processes, reporting tools, payment providers, or financial control procedures.
- Follow approved authorisation processes when processing adjustments and ensure that financial changes are supported by appropriate evidence.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Relevant experience in payment settlements, financial reconciliation, banking operations, accounting operations, treasury support, or a comparable analytical position.
- Understanding of clearing and settlement processes, including settlement cycles, net settlement, transaction fees, refunds, reversals, and reconciliation differences.
- Experience working with financial transaction data and investigating discrepancies between multiple records or reporting systems.
- Strong spreadsheet skills, including the ability to reconcile large datasets, apply lookup functions, use pivot tables, and prepare structured financial reports.
- Ability to interpret bank statements, payment processor settlement files, transaction reports, and accounting records.
- High level of numerical accuracy and a disciplined approach to maintaining financial documentation.
- Strong analytical and investigative skills, including the ability to distinguish timing differences from genuine settlement discrepancies.
- Good written and verbal communication skills for coordinating with finance teams, payment partners, and technical stakeholders.
- Ability to manage recurring deadlines, prioritise time-sensitive settlement issues, and maintain a clear record of outstanding work.
- Familiarity with accounting systems, payment operations platforms, treasury systems, or reconciliation software.
- Understanding of financial controls, segregation of duties, approval workflows, and the importance of audit trails.
- Experience with multi-currency payments, cross-border settlement, card acquiring, or high-volume payment processing would be advantageous.
- Knowledge of SQL, data visualisation tools, automated reconciliation, or basic data analysis techniques would be an added advantage.
- Relevant education in finance, accounting, economics, business, or a quantitative discipline is beneficial; equivalent practical experience will also be considered.
Benefits
