Description
Position Summary
We are seeking a technically capable Fintech Application Support Engineer to maintain the stability, availability, and operational performance of financial technology applications. This role focuses on diagnosing application incidents, investigating system errors, supporting production environments, and ensuring that business-critical financial services operate reliably.
The successful candidate will serve as a technical point of contact for application-related issues affecting payment workflows, digital financial platforms, transaction-processing services, and internal business applications. Working alongside software engineers, infrastructure specialists, product teams, and operational stakeholders, the engineer will investigate incidents, identify root causes, coordinate resolutions, and help prevent recurring technical problems.
This is a hands-on technical position suited to someone who enjoys troubleshooting complex systems, analysing application behaviour, and improving service reliability. The ideal candidate combines sound software and infrastructure knowledge with a practical understanding of the operational requirements of financial technology.
Key Responsibilities
-
Production Application Support: Monitor application health, investigate service disruptions, and support the availability of critical fintech systems.
-
Incident Investigation: Diagnose application errors, failed requests, unexpected responses, processing delays, and other technical issues affecting system functionality.
-
Root-Cause Analysis: Examine application logs, database records, system metrics, and service dependencies to determine the underlying causes of incidents.
-
Transaction Issue Resolution: Investigate application-level problems involving incomplete processing, delayed status updates, failed integrations, and inconsistent transaction information.
-
Log and Performance Analysis: Use logging, monitoring, and tracing tools to identify recurring errors, performance degradation, and abnormal application behaviour.
-
Technical Escalation: Coordinate complex incidents with development, database, infrastructure, and security teams, providing clear evidence and reproducible findings.
-
Application Configuration: Support approved configuration changes, environment settings, service parameters, and application deployments in accordance with established procedures.
-
Release Verification: Perform post-deployment checks to confirm that application updates have been implemented successfully and critical functionality remains operational.
-
Knowledge Base Development: Document known errors, troubleshooting procedures, incident resolutions, and workarounds to improve future response times.
-
Service Improvement: Identify recurring operational problems and recommend permanent fixes, automation opportunities, and improvements to application support processes.
-
Access and Security Controls: Follow approved access-management procedures, protect sensitive information, and escalate suspected security incidents promptly.
-
Operational Reporting: Prepare incident summaries, recurring-problem reports, and service-performance observations for relevant technical stakeholders.
Qualifications and Experience
Candidates should have a strong technical foundation and the ability to investigate application problems methodically.
Essential requirements:
-
A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
-
At least two years of experience in application support, production support, software operations, or a related technical role.
-
Familiarity with Linux or Windows server environments and basic command-line troubleshooting.
-
Working knowledge of SQL for inspecting application records and investigating data-related issues.
-
Understanding of HTTP, REST APIs, authentication mechanisms, and common application error responses.
-
Experience analysing application logs and using monitoring tools to diagnose technical problems.
-
Familiarity with incident management, ticketing workflows, escalation procedures, and service-level objectives.
-
Ability to communicate technical findings clearly to developers, operations teams, and non-technical stakeholders.
-
Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritise incidents according to business impact.
Previous experience supporting payment systems, banking applications, trading platforms, or other transaction-intensive software would be an advantage.
Technical Environment
The role may involve working with technologies and tools such as:
-
Operating systems: Linux, Windows Server, and command-line utilities.
-
Databases: PostgreSQL, MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, or comparable relational database systems.
-
Application technologies: REST APIs, JSON, web applications, background services, and distributed applications.
-
Monitoring and observability: Grafana, Prometheus, Kibana, Elasticsearch, or comparable monitoring platforms.
-
Cloud environments: AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud.
-
Deployment and infrastructure: Docker, CI/CD pipelines, configuration management, and application release tooling.
-
Support management: Jira Service Management, ServiceNow, or equivalent incident and ticketing platforms.
-
Scripting: Basic Python, Bash, or PowerShell for troubleshooting and routine operational automation.
The candidate is not expected to be an expert in every technology. Practical troubleshooting skills and the ability to learn the organisation’s technical environment are more important than familiarity with a specific vendor.
Incident Management and Service Reliability
Because fintech applications support time-sensitive financial activities, the engineer must understand the importance of structured incident response and accurate communication.
The successful candidate will help classify incidents according to severity, assess customer and business impact, maintain clear incident records, and ensure that unresolved issues reach the appropriate technical specialists.
Where financial transactions are involved, investigations must distinguish between application errors and underlying transaction-processing outcomes. The engineer should never assume that a failed user request means a transaction was not processed; appropriate system records and authorised reconciliation procedures must be used to establish the actual status.
First Six Months: Expected Outcomes
During the first six months, the successful candidate should aim to:
-
Develop a working understanding of the organisation’s applications, infrastructure, and support procedures.
-
Resolve routine application incidents independently within the defined support framework.
-
Improve the quality and completeness of incident records and technical escalations.
-
Identify recurring application failures and contribute to root-cause investigations.
-
Strengthen troubleshooting documentation and known-error resources.
-
Contribute to improvements in incident resolution time and application service reliability.
Performance will be evaluated through incident-handling quality, response and resolution performance against agreed targets, accuracy of technical investigations, documentation standards, and contributions to reducing recurring incidents.
Professional Attributes
The ideal candidate is calm under pressure, systematic in troubleshooting, and able to make sound decisions within established procedures. They should recognise when an issue requires immediate escalation and communicate operational risks without unnecessary delay.
A customer-focused mindset, strong technical curiosity, and an interest in understanding how software behaves in production are essential. The ability to collaborate with engineers while maintaining clear communication with business stakeholders will be particularly valuable.
Why This Opportunity?
This position provides an opportunity to work directly with the systems that keep modern financial technology services operational. The engineer will gain practical experience with production applications, financial workflows, technical incident management, and service reliability in a technology-focused Estonian business environment.
The role also offers a foundation for progression into senior application support, site reliability engineering, cloud operations, platform engineering, or production engineering.
Ideal candidate: A practical technical troubleshooter who combines application knowledge, disciplined incident management, and strong analytical skills to maintain dependable fintech services and minimise operational disruption.
