Description
Position Overview
An established financial markets team is seeking a Currency Strategist to support institutional foreign exchange analysis, portfolio positioning, and currency-risk assessment. The role focuses on understanding how global economic conditions, monetary policy divergence, capital movements, and market positioning influence currency valuations.
The successful candidate will combine strategic thinking with rigorous research to develop differentiated currency views for institutional trading, treasury, and investment teams. This position is suited to a professional who can connect macroeconomic developments with market behaviour and communicate practical implications to sophisticated financial stakeholders.
Principal Responsibilities
-
Develop strategic views on major, minor, and selected emerging-market currencies using macroeconomic and market-based evidence.
-
Assess relative currency valuations through purchasing power parity, real effective exchange rates, interest-rate differentials, and balance-of-payments indicators.
-
Analyse monetary policy divergence among the European Central Bank, Federal Reserve, Bank of England, and other relevant central banks.
-
Evaluate yield curves, sovereign bond spreads, options-implied volatility, risk reversals, and other FX market indicators.
-
Formulate currency scenarios under alternative inflation, growth, monetary policy, and geopolitical conditions.
-
Provide research input for institutional FX positioning, portfolio hedging, and currency allocation discussions.
-
Examine market liquidity, investor positioning, capital flows, and potential catalysts for changes in exchange-rate trends.
-
Collaborate with portfolio managers, institutional traders, treasury specialists, and risk professionals.
-
Produce investment-grade research notes, strategic outlooks, scenario analyses, and presentations for internal and external audiences.
-
Review the performance of currency views against defined benchmarks and document the assumptions behind major forecast revisions.
-
Ensure research is balanced, appropriately qualified, and consistent with internal governance and applicable financial-market requirements.
Required Qualifications and Experience
-
Degree in Economics, Finance, Econometrics, or a closely related field; a postgraduate qualification is an advantage.
-
Approximately 5–8 years of experience in FX strategy, institutional research, macroeconomic analysis, or investment markets.
-
Strong knowledge of currency valuation, international monetary economics, derivatives, and institutional FX market structure.
-
Demonstrated ability to develop coherent macroeconomic scenarios and translate them into currency-market implications.
-
Experience working with financial-market data, yield curves, FX forwards, and options-based indicators.
-
Advanced Excel skills and familiarity with Bloomberg, Refinitiv, or comparable financial information systems.
-
Knowledge of Python, R, econometric modelling, or statistical forecasting is desirable.
-
Strong analytical judgement, professional writing skills, and confidence presenting research to senior stakeholders.
-
Ability to manage several research priorities while maintaining methodological consistency.
Professional Competencies
The role calls for intellectual independence, disciplined reasoning, and a strong understanding of the limitations of market forecasts. The candidate should be able to challenge prevailing market assumptions, distinguish structural trends from temporary volatility, and explain why a currency view may change when new evidence emerges.
Performance Expectations
Success will be measured through the quality and timeliness of research, the clarity of strategic recommendations, the robustness of scenario analysis, and the usefulness of insights to investment and risk decisions. The strategist is expected to maintain a consistent research process and provide clear explanations when market developments invalidate previous assumptions.
Career Opportunity
This position provides exposure to institutional currency strategy and cross-asset research, with opportunities to develop deeper expertise in global macroeconomics, portfolio currency management, and investment strategy. It is appropriate for an experienced researcher seeking greater responsibility for strategic market analysis without requiring a people-management role.
