We are looking for a skilled Backend Engineer to help develop and maintain the services that power our payment platform.

About the Role

As a Backend Engineer specialising in payment processing, you will design, develop, and maintain backend services responsible for transaction execution, payment status management, and integration with external payment systems. You will work closely with product managers, frontend engineers, QA specialists, and infrastructure teams to deliver secure, high-performance financial applications.

This role requires strong backend development skills, an understanding of distributed systems, and a commitment to data integrity, reliability, and secure transaction handling.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and maintain backend services supporting payment initiation, processing, and transaction lifecycle management.
• Build reliable REST APIs and internal services for payment workflows and partner integrations.
• Implement transaction validation, idempotency controls, retry mechanisms, and error-handling strategies.
• Develop services that maintain data consistency and prevent duplicate or incorrectly processed transactions.
• Integrate with banks, payment service providers, card processing platforms, and other financial systems.
• Work with relational and non-relational databases to ensure efficient data storage, retrieval, and transaction integrity.
• Implement automated unit, integration, and end-to-end tests for critical payment functionality.
• Investigate production incidents, analyse application logs, and resolve performance or transaction-processing issues.
• Collaborate with DevOps and infrastructure teams to improve deployment processes, monitoring, and service availability.
• Apply secure coding practices and contribute to the protection of sensitive financial information.
• Participate in code reviews, technical design discussions, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Requirements and Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
• Professional experience developing backend applications in Java, Kotlin, C#, Go, Python, or Node.js.
• Strong understanding of REST APIs, HTTP protocols, authentication, and service-to-service communication.
• Experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL and a solid understanding of SQL.
• Knowledge of transaction processing, concurrency, idempotency, and distributed system fundamentals.
• Familiarity with automated testing, version control, CI/CD pipelines, and production debugging.
• Understanding of application security, access controls, and secure data handling.
• Ability to write maintainable, well-documented, and testable code.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Professional working proficiency in English; Estonian language skills are an advantage.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience in payment gateways, banking applications, fintech platforms, or transaction processing systems.
• Familiarity with message brokers such as Kafka, RabbitMQ, or similar technologies.
• Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud platforms.
• Knowledge of reconciliation processes, payment status transitions, or settlement workflows.
• Understanding of PCI DSS requirements where cardholder data environments are involved.
