Description

Company Overview

The organisation operates within the financial technology sector, supporting digital financial services that require robust customer verification, transaction oversight, and effective financial crime prevention controls. Its operating environment involves digital customer onboarding, financial transactions, payment-related activities, and technology-enabled services where maintaining trust, protecting customers, and identifying suspicious activity are essential.

The Risk, Compliance & Financial Crime Prevention department works across operations, product, engineering, and business functions to maintain effective controls and support responsible financial service delivery. The team focuses on customer due diligence, transaction monitoring, sanctions screening, suspicious activity escalation, and the continuous improvement of compliance procedures.

The organisation values risk-based decision-making, accurate documentation, confidentiality, and the responsible use of technology in identifying and managing financial crime risks. This remote opportunity is suitable for an experienced compliance professional who combines regulatory awareness with analytical thinking and practical knowledge of financial crime prevention in digital financial environments.

Role Summary

The Senior Financial Crime Compliance Specialist will support the design, implementation, monitoring, and continuous improvement of anti-money laundering (AML), know-your-customer (KYC), and transaction monitoring controls. The role involves reviewing customer information, investigating unusual transaction patterns, assessing potential financial crime indicators, and ensuring that cases are documented and escalated in accordance with established procedures.

Working with compliance colleagues, risk analysts, operations teams, and relevant technical stakeholders, the specialist will help maintain effective financial crime controls throughout the customer lifecycle. Responsibilities will include customer risk assessments, enhanced due diligence reviews, screening investigations, suspicious activity analysis, and the identification of weaknesses in existing monitoring processes.

The position requires balanced judgement. Not every unusual transaction indicates criminal activity, and every material concern must be evaluated using the available evidence, relevant customer information, and applicable procedures. The successful candidate will help ensure that investigations are thorough, proportionate, confidential, and properly documented.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct and review customer due diligence activities, including identity verification, beneficial ownership checks, customer risk classification, and the assessment of relevant supporting documentation.

  • Perform enhanced due diligence reviews for higher-risk customers, complex ownership structures, unusual business models, and other cases requiring additional scrutiny.

  • Review alerts generated by transaction monitoring systems and investigate activity that may indicate money laundering, fraud, sanctions exposure, or other financial crime risks.

  • Analyse transaction histories, payment patterns, customer profiles, counterparties, geographic exposure, and related information to establish the context of unusual activity.

  • Document investigative findings clearly, including the rationale for decisions, evidence reviewed, outstanding information requirements, and recommended next steps.

  • Escalate potentially suspicious activity to the appropriate compliance personnel in accordance with internal procedures and applicable legal requirements.

  • Support the preparation of suspicious transaction or activity reports where required, subject to the organisation’s reporting responsibilities and established approval processes.

  • Conduct sanctions, politically exposed person (PEP), and adverse media screening reviews, assessing potential matches and documenting appropriate resolution decisions.

  • Participate in periodic customer reviews, ongoing monitoring, and risk-based reviews triggered by changes in customer behaviour or other relevant information.

  • Help maintain risk assessment methodologies that distinguish between customer, product, geographic, delivery-channel, and transaction-related risk factors.

  • Review financial crime monitoring rules and alert outcomes to identify potential gaps, excessive false positives, emerging patterns, and opportunities for improved detection.

  • Collaborate with data, product, and engineering teams to communicate monitoring requirements and contribute to the improvement of compliance technology.

  • Assist with compliance quality assurance activities, including the review of completed cases, identification of documentation deficiencies, and implementation of corrective actions.

  • Maintain accurate records of customer reviews, investigations, escalations, and decisions in approved compliance systems.

  • Support internal audits, regulatory reviews, and information requests by preparing relevant documentation and explaining the rationale behind compliance decisions.

  • Monitor relevant regulatory developments and industry guidance affecting AML, KYC, sanctions screening, and transaction monitoring.

  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of compliance procedures, investigation guidance, escalation frameworks, and internal training materials.

  • Promote appropriate handling of confidential customer information and ensure that access to sensitive records follows applicable data protection and internal security requirements.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Law, Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, Criminology, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.

  • Several years of experience in AML, KYC, transaction monitoring, financial crime compliance, fraud investigation, or a closely related role.

  • Practical understanding of customer due diligence, enhanced due diligence, beneficial ownership verification, sanctions screening, and customer risk assessment.

  • Experience investigating unusual financial activity and producing clear, evidence-based case documentation.

  • Familiarity with transaction monitoring systems, screening tools, case management platforms, and compliance workflow applications.

  • Understanding of risk-based compliance frameworks and the importance of applying proportionate controls to different customer and transaction profiles.

  • Ability to analyse complex information, recognise suspicious patterns, distinguish relevant evidence from assumptions, and make defensible recommendations.

  • Familiarity with the Estonian and European Union AML and financial crime compliance environment, including relevant obligations under applicable legislation.

  • Strong written communication skills and the ability to prepare clear investigative summaries, escalation notes, and compliance reports.

  • High levels of integrity, confidentiality, attention to detail, and professional judgement.

  • Ability to manage multiple cases, meet established deadlines, and prioritise investigations according to risk and urgency.

  • Confidence collaborating with operational, technical, and compliance stakeholders in a remote working environment.

  • Relevant qualifications such as CAMS, ICA AML certifications, or comparable professional credentials are advantageous.

  • Experience in fintech, digital payments, electronic money services, banking, or other technology-enabled financial services is an advantage.

Benefits

  • Remote working arrangements within Estonia, subject to the organisation’s employment and operational policies.

  • Opportunity to contribute to financial crime prevention within a technology-driven financial services environment.

  • Exposure to digital onboarding, transaction monitoring, sanctions screening, and evolving compliance technologies.

  • Opportunities for professional development through relevant training, industry knowledge-sharing, and recognised compliance qualifications.

  • Collaboration with experienced professionals across compliance, operations, technology, and risk management.

  • A working environment that values accurate investigations, responsible decision-making, and continuous improvement.

  • Opportunities to contribute to stronger monitoring procedures, improved case quality, and more effective financial crime controls.
