Description
Company Overview
The organisation operates within the financial technology sector, providing or supporting digital financial services in an environment where sound financial planning, disciplined cost management, and accurate performance reporting are important to sustainable growth. Business decisions depend on reliable financial information, clear forecasts, and an understanding of how operating activities translate into revenue, expenses, cash requirements, and overall financial performance.
In a changing fintech market, finance teams must help decision-makers assess operating costs, evaluate investment priorities, monitor financial performance, and understand the potential impact of different business scenarios. Effective financial planning and analysis provide a structured basis for budgeting, resource allocation, performance evaluation, and longer-term planning.
The organisation is seeking a Financial Planning and Analysis Specialist to support budgeting, forecasting, management reporting, and financial performance analysis. The successful candidate will work with finance colleagues and operational stakeholders to turn financial and business data into useful insights that support informed decisions.
Role Summary
The Financial Planning and Analysis Specialist will contribute to the preparation of budgets, periodic forecasts, management reports, and financial models. The role involves comparing actual results against approved plans, analysing variances, investigating changes in revenue and expenses, and preparing explanations that help stakeholders understand financial performance.
The successful candidate will support the development and maintenance of financial models that reflect operational drivers, business assumptions, planned expenditure, and expected financial outcomes. They will gather information from multiple departments, validate the underlying data, and help ensure that forecasts are based on reasonable and clearly documented assumptions.
The role also requires the ability to communicate financial findings to colleagues who may not have a finance background. Rather than simply presenting figures, the specialist will help explain what has changed, why it matters, and which factors may influence future performance.
This position is suited to a finance professional with strong analytical skills, a structured approach to reporting, and an interest in using financial information to support operational planning and business development.
Key Responsibilities
-
Budget preparation: Support annual and periodic budgeting processes by collecting financial inputs, consolidating departmental estimates, validating assumptions, and preparing budget schedules.
-
Financial forecasting: Develop and update financial forecasts using historical performance, current operating data, planned expenditure, revenue expectations, and documented business assumptions.
-
Variance analysis: Compare actual financial results against budget and forecast figures, identify material differences, investigate their causes, and prepare clear explanations for review.
-
Management reporting: Produce recurring financial reports covering revenue, operating expenses, cash-flow expectations, departmental spending, and other relevant performance indicators.
-
Financial modelling: Build and maintain spreadsheet-based financial models to evaluate business assumptions, estimate financial outcomes, and assess alternative operating scenarios.
-
Cost analysis: Review expenditure patterns, identify significant cost movements, and support analysis of resource utilisation, supplier spending, operating expenses, and planned investments.
-
Revenue analysis: Analyse relevant revenue streams, pricing assumptions, transaction activity, customer or product performance indicators, and other available business drivers.
-
Business partnering: Work with operational teams to understand their financial requirements, challenge unsupported assumptions constructively, and ensure that budgets reflect realistic operating plans.
-
Scenario planning: Prepare sensitivity analyses to assess how changes in transaction volumes, revenue, costs, staffing, technology expenditure, or market conditions could affect financial outcomes.
-
Forecast accuracy: Compare previous forecasts with actual results, identify recurring sources of error, and recommend improvements to forecasting assumptions and methodologies.
-
Month-end reporting support: Coordinate with accounting colleagues to ensure that management reports reflect appropriately reconciled financial information and relevant closing adjustments.
-
Financial data quality: Validate reporting inputs, investigate inconsistencies, maintain model integrity, and ensure that calculations and assumptions are documented.
-
Cash-flow planning: Support analysis of expected receipts, operating payments, investment requirements, and other factors affecting future cash needs.
-
Performance indicators: Help develop and maintain relevant financial and operational KPIs, ensuring that reports are consistent and useful for management review.
-
Process automation: Identify opportunities to streamline reporting through standardised templates, improved data preparation, spreadsheet automation, or suitable business intelligence tools.
-
Presentation of insights: Prepare concise written summaries, charts, and management presentations that communicate financial trends, risks, opportunities, and forecast implications.
-
Planning coordination: Maintain budgeting calendars, reporting deadlines, assumptions registers, and documentation required for the annual planning cycle and periodic forecast updates.
-
Continuous improvement: Recommend improvements to financial reporting processes, model design, data collection, and collaboration between finance and operational departments.
