Description

Role Summary

We are seeking a technically capable Financial Reconciliation & Data Analyst to improve the accuracy and efficiency of transaction matching, settlement validation, and financial data reporting.

Unlike a purely manual reconciliation position, this role combines financial operations knowledge with data analysis and process automation. The analyst will work with large transaction datasets from payment platforms, banks, accounting systems, and external service providers to identify inconsistencies, explain financial variances, and improve the reliability of reconciliation outputs.

The successful candidate will be comfortable working across both financial and technical domains, using structured analysis to resolve discrepancies and helping the organisation transition from repetitive manual checks towards more scalable, data-driven reconciliation processes.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Data Analysis

  • Analyse high-volume transaction datasets from payment processors, bank statements, settlement reports, and internal financial ledgers.
  • Design and maintain matching rules using transaction identifiers, amounts, dates, currencies, references, and settlement attributes.
  • Investigate unmatched records, duplicate transactions, partial payments, missing entries, and inconsistencies between financial systems.
  • Perform variance analysis to identify differences between expected and actual settlement values.
  • Validate transaction completeness and accuracy before financial reporting and reconciliation sign-off.
  • Produce clear explanations of outstanding balances and material reconciliation differences.

Automation and Technical Improvement

  • Develop and maintain automated reconciliation templates, data-processing scripts, and exception-reporting workflows.
  • Use SQL to extract, compare, and validate financial records across relevant databases.
  • Apply Python or similar scripting tools where appropriate to automate repetitive matching and validation tasks.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to investigate data inconsistencies, integration failures, and discrepancies between source systems.
  • Test reconciliation logic and data outputs following payment platform updates, accounting system changes, or new integrations.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce manual processing, improve matching rates, and minimise recurring reconciliation errors.
  • Maintain documentation covering data sources, matching logic, exception categories, and process limitations.

Reporting and Financial Controls

  • Develop reconciliation dashboards and reports that highlight unresolved items, ageing discrepancies, settlement performance, and recurring error patterns.
  • Support month-end financial close by providing reliable reconciliation evidence and variance explanations.
  • Ensure that adjustments and exceptions are traceable to source transactions and supported by appropriate documentation.
  • Apply appropriate access controls and data-handling practices when working with financial and personal information.
  • Assist with audit requests, internal control reviews, and the validation of financial reporting outputs.
  • Communicate findings and recommendations to finance, treasury, payment operations, and technical stakeholders.

Candidate Requirements

  • Degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business Analytics, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related discipline.
  • Experience in financial reconciliation, payment operations, data analysis, financial reporting, or a comparable analytical position.
  • Strong Excel skills and practical experience analysing large datasets.
  • Working knowledge of SQL, including filtering, joins, aggregations, and data validation.
  • Familiarity with Python, Power Query, Power BI, Tableau, or similar tools is an advantage.
  • Understanding of payment processing, bank settlements, general ledger records, and financial transaction lifecycles.
  • Ability to translate financial discrepancies into structured investigations and actionable findings.
  • Strong analytical reasoning, attention to detail, and written communication skills.
  • A disciplined approach to data quality, documentation, and financial control.

Preferred Technical Background

Experience with automated reconciliation platforms, ERP systems, payment APIs, ISO 20022 payment data, SEPA transactions, or multi-currency financial operations is desirable. Candidates who have improved reconciliation accuracy through scripting, reporting automation, or data-quality controls will be particularly well suited to the role.

Success Measures

Performance will be assessed through reconciliation accuracy, the percentage of transactions matched automatically, the volume and age of unresolved exceptions, reporting reliability, and measurable reductions in manual processing effort.

Why Join This Opportunity?

This position provides an opportunity to influence how financial data is validated, reconciled, and reported across modern payment systems. You will contribute not only to accurate financial records but also to better operational visibility, improved processing efficiency, and stronger controls through automation.

Ideal Candidate: A data-driven financial professional who combines reconciliation expertise with technical problem-solving skills and can turn complex transaction data into accurate, efficient, and auditable financial processes.
