Description
Position Overview
We are looking for a Financial Systems Integration Engineer to connect banking infrastructure, payment services, internal applications, and external financial technology platforms. This role focuses on building dependable integration layers that enable financial systems to exchange information accurately, process requests consistently, and recover effectively from operational failures.
You will contribute to integration architecture, interface development, data transformation, and technical troubleshooting across a range of financial services. The role is particularly suited to an engineer who enjoys working at the intersection of backend development, financial systems, and API infrastructure.
Knowledge of open banking and the European PSD2 framework will be valuable, particularly when integrating regulated account information or payment initiation services.
Core Responsibilities
- Build and maintain integration services connecting internal financial applications with external banks, payment providers, and identity verification services.
- Develop API adapters and reusable integration components that standardize communication across providers with different technical specifications.
- Implement data transformation and validation logic to ensure consistency between external API responses and internal financial data models.
- Work with asynchronous processing, webhooks, event-driven workflows, and message queues where appropriate.
- Implement resilient integration patterns, including controlled retries, circuit breakers, timeout handling, duplicate-request protection, and failure recovery.
- Support secure authentication, token lifecycle management, certificate configuration, and authorization checks.
- Participate in technical discovery and integration planning for new banking partners and third-party services.
- Conduct integration testing, contract testing, regression testing, and troubleshooting in development and production environments.
- Investigate reconciliation discrepancies, failed transactions, incomplete data exchanges, and unexpected provider responses.
- Maintain integration documentation, operational procedures, and troubleshooting guides.
- Collaborate with infrastructure, security, compliance, and product teams to ensure integrations meet operational and business requirements.
Technical Requirements
- Professional experience in backend development, financial systems integration, or enterprise application connectivity.
- Proficiency in one or more backend technologies, such as Java and Spring Boot, C# and .NET, Python, or Node.js.
- Strong understanding of REST APIs, HTTP, JSON, webhooks, and API contract design.
- Experience with relational databases and data consistency across interconnected services.
- Familiarity with message brokers or event-streaming technologies, such as RabbitMQ, Kafka, or comparable platforms.
- Knowledge of authentication and authorization concepts, including OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, and secure token handling.
- Understanding of logging, monitoring, distributed tracing, and production incident investigation.
- Experience using Git, automated testing frameworks, and CI/CD tooling.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to document technical decisions clearly.
Open Banking and Regulatory Knowledge
Candidates should understand the purpose of open banking interfaces and the need to protect financial data throughout the integration lifecycle. Relevant experience may include:
- Integrating account information or payment initiation APIs.
- Working with PSD2-related technical standards and bank-specific implementation requirements.
- Supporting consent management and strong customer authentication flows.
- Understanding certificate-based trust mechanisms and secure communication between authorized parties.
- Working with sandbox environments, provider documentation, and integration certification or conformance tests.
Detailed PSD2 implementation experience is advantageous, but strong integration engineering experience combined with the ability to learn provider-specific standards will also be considered.
Professional Attributes
The successful candidate will be methodical, technically curious, and comfortable investigating problems that cross multiple systems. You should be able to balance implementation speed with data integrity, maintainability, and operational resilience.
Opportunity
This position offers the opportunity to contribute to financial infrastructure that supports interconnected banking and payment services. You will work on practical engineering challenges involving system interoperability, transaction workflows, data quality, and the reliability of financial integrations.
Applicants should submit a CV highlighting relevant backend, API, and systems integration experience, including examples of financial or regulated-sector projects where applicable.
