Senior Financial API Engineer

Build the Connectivity Layer for a New Generation of Financial Services

An innovative fintech organization in Estonia is seeking a Senior Financial API Engineer to design and develop the API infrastructure connecting financial products, internal platforms, external partners, and digital customer experiences.

This is a specialist engineering position focused on creating secure, high-performance, developer-friendly financial APIs. You will play a central role in establishing the interfaces through which payment, account, transaction, identity, and financial-data capabilities are exposed to modern applications.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and develop scalable APIs supporting financial products and services.
• Establish API architectures that provide secure and reliable access to financial capabilities.
• Develop services for account information, transactions, payments, customer data, and financial events.
• Design authentication, authorization, consent, rate-limiting, and access-control mechanisms.
• Build APIs capable of handling high transaction volumes while maintaining predictable performance.
• Establish API versioning, lifecycle-management, documentation, and backward-compatibility strategies.
• Develop event-driven interfaces and webhook systems for real-time financial notifications.
• Integrate internal APIs with banks, payment providers, identity services, and other financial platforms.
• Implement comprehensive API monitoring, testing, observability, and performance-management practices.
• Work with product and engineering teams to define intuitive interfaces for complex financial capabilities.
• Investigate API failures, latency issues, data inconsistencies, and integration problems in production.
• Establish engineering standards for secure API development and maintainability.
• Mentor other engineers and contribute to the organization’s broader platform architecture.

What You Bring

• 5+ years of professional experience in backend engineering or API/platform development.
• Strong experience designing and operating production-grade APIs.
• Excellent knowledge of REST, JSON, OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, webhooks, and API security.
• Strong proficiency in Java, Kotlin, Go, Python, TypeScript, or comparable technologies.
• Solid understanding of distributed systems, databases, messaging, caching, and asynchronous processing.
• Experience working with financial, payment, banking, or other high-integrity data.
• Familiarity with API gateways, service meshes, observability, and automated testing.
• Experience with cloud infrastructure and containerized application environments.
• Strong understanding of authentication, authorization, encryption, and sensitive-data protection.
• Excellent technical communication and problem-solving abilities.

Technical Environment

The environment may include REST/gRPC, OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, API gateways, Kafka, PostgreSQL, Redis, Kubernetes, Docker, cloud platforms, webhooks, service meshes, and automated API-testing infrastructure.
