Description
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Solutions Architect to design scalable, secure, and maintainable technology solutions that address business requirements and support long-term digital growth in Estonia. The successful candidate will translate business objectives into practical technical architectures, evaluate technology options, and guide engineering teams through the implementation of systems that integrate effectively with existing applications, data platforms, and external services.
Working across software engineering, product, infrastructure, security, and business operations, the Solutions Architect will establish architectural direction while ensuring that proposed solutions remain commercially viable, technically robust, and aligned with organisational priorities. The role requires a combination of hands-on technical understanding, systems thinking, stakeholder communication, and sound architectural judgement.
The ideal candidate can assess complex requirements, identify integration challenges, balance competing technical considerations, and communicate architectural decisions clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences. Experience with cloud-native applications, APIs, distributed systems, and enterprise integration will be particularly valuable.
Key Responsibilities
-
Solution Architecture: Design end-to-end technology solutions that address functional and non-functional requirements, including performance, scalability, availability, security, and maintainability.
-
Requirements Analysis: Work with business stakeholders, product managers, and engineering teams to understand operational needs and translate them into clear technical specifications and architecture proposals.
-

-
Systems Integration: Define reliable integration approaches across internal applications, third-party platforms, APIs, databases, and cloud services.
-
Cloud Architecture: Evaluate and design cloud-based solutions using platforms such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud, considering resilience, cost, security, and operational complexity.
-
Application Design: Guide the design of modular applications, microservices, event-driven systems, and other appropriate architectural patterns based on business and technical requirements.
-
Technology Evaluation: Assess frameworks, platforms, infrastructure services, and third-party products against technical suitability, total cost of ownership, vendor reliability, and long-term support.
-
Security by Design: Incorporate identity and access management, encryption, secure communication, data protection, and threat-mitigation considerations into solution designs.
-
Data Architecture: Define appropriate approaches to data storage, data exchange, consistency, retention, and access across integrated systems.
-
Technical Standards: Establish reusable architectural patterns, integration standards, design principles, and engineering guidelines that improve consistency across projects.
-
Performance and Scalability: Evaluate expected workloads, identify potential bottlenecks, and recommend suitable approaches to capacity planning, caching, load balancing, and system optimisation.
-
Delivery Support: Collaborate with developers, DevOps engineers, QA specialists, and technical leads during implementation to ensure solutions remain consistent with approved architecture.
-
Risk and Trade-off Analysis: Identify architectural risks, dependencies, technical constraints, and implementation costs; present alternatives with clear explanations of their advantages and limitations.
-
Legacy System Modernisation: Assess existing applications and recommend practical approaches to migration, integration, refactoring, or replacement where business value justifies the change.
-
Architecture Governance: Participate in technical design reviews, validate key architectural decisions, and help ensure that solutions meet agreed engineering, security, and operational standards.
-
Continuous Improvement: Review implemented solutions, gather feedback from delivery teams, and identify opportunities to simplify architecture, improve reliability, and reduce unnecessary complexity.
Qualifications and Experience
-
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
-
Significant experience in software engineering, systems integration, technical consulting, application architecture, or a related technology role.
-
Demonstrated ability to design and communicate end-to-end solutions for applications, services, and enterprise technology environments.
-
Strong understanding of software architecture principles, including modularity, separation of concerns, service boundaries, and design for maintainability.
-
Practical experience with RESTful APIs, API gateways, authentication protocols, web services, and third-party system integrations.
-
Knowledge of cloud architecture and services across AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud Platform.
-
Understanding of relational and non-relational databases, data modelling, caching, messaging systems, and data integration patterns.
-
Familiarity with distributed systems, microservices, asynchronous communication, event-driven architecture, and resilience patterns.
-
Knowledge of application security, identity management, encryption, secure coding practices, and relevant data protection requirements.
-
Experience evaluating technical requirements and balancing performance, reliability, delivery timelines, and operating costs.
-
Ability to produce clear technical documentation and communicate complex architecture decisions to diverse stakeholders.
-
Familiarity with Agile delivery methods, software development life cycles, version control, testing practices, and modern deployment workflows.
-
Strong analytical skills, structured problem-solving ability, and a practical approach to resolving technical ambiguity.
Technical Environment
The Solutions Architect may work with a combination of the following technologies and architectural practices, depending on the organisation’s existing systems and project requirements.
-
Cloud Platforms: AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform.
-
Application Architecture: Microservices, modular monoliths, distributed systems, event-driven architecture.
-
API and Integration: REST, GraphQL, OpenAPI, API gateways, webhooks, OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect.
-
Programming Ecosystems: Java, C#, Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, or comparable languages.
-
Data Technologies: PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, MongoDB, Redis.
-
Messaging and Streaming: Apache Kafka, RabbitMQ, cloud-native messaging services.
-
Containers and Deployment: Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code.
-
Architecture and Documentation: C4 model, UML, architecture decision records, solution design documents.
-
Security and Governance: IAM, encryption, secrets management, secure design reviews, data protection controls.
-
Observability and Reliability: Centralised logging, metrics, distributed tracing, monitoring, backup and recovery planning.
Candidates do not need to have experience with every technology listed. The priority is a strong architectural foundation, sound technical judgement, and the ability to select appropriate tools for specific business requirements.
Core Competencies
Architectural judgement: Selects suitable design patterns and technologies based on actual requirements rather than defaulting to unnecessary complexity or fashionable tools.
Systems thinking: Understands how applications, infrastructure, integrations, data flows, and operational processes interact within a wider technology ecosystem.
Stakeholder communication: Explains architectural decisions, technical risks, dependencies, and trade-offs clearly to engineers, business leaders, and project stakeholders.
Technical leadership: Provides architectural guidance, facilitates design reviews, and helps engineering teams make consistent, well-reasoned implementation decisions.
Security and reliability awareness: Considers failure scenarios, data protection, access control, operational resilience, and maintainability from the beginning of the design process.
Commercial awareness: Evaluates delivery effort, operational costs, vendor dependencies, and long-term maintenance when recommending a solution.
Pragmatic problem-solving: Produces designs that are technically sound and achievable within the organisation’s delivery capacity, budget, and operational constraints.
Performance Expectations
Performance will be evaluated against measurable delivery and architecture outcomes, including:
-
Alignment between approved solution designs and business requirements.
-
Quality, clarity, and completeness of architecture documentation.
