Description
Position Overview
We are looking for a Fraud Investigator to examine suspected fraud incidents, establish relevant facts, assess supporting evidence, and prepare clear investigation reports. The role focuses on understanding how fraudulent activity occurs, determining the extent of potential losses, identifying associated accounts or transactions, and supporting appropriate action in line with internal procedures and applicable law.
The successful candidate will manage cases from initial referral through investigation and documented resolution. You will work closely with fraud operations, compliance, customer service, and security teams while maintaining an objective approach to evidence gathering and case assessment.
Principal Responsibilities
- Conduct investigations into suspected payment fraud, identity misuse, account compromise, social engineering, and other financial misconduct.
- Review transaction records, customer communications, account histories, supporting documents, and relevant technical information.
- Establish case timelines and identify inconsistencies, relationships, and patterns that may help explain suspicious activity.
- Assess customer complaints and disputed transactions to determine whether further investigation or escalation is required.
- Prepare structured investigation summaries detailing the allegation, evidence reviewed, findings, unresolved questions, and recommended next steps.
- Coordinate with internal stakeholders to obtain relevant records and clarify facts while observing confidentiality and access-control requirements.
- Identify possible links between cases, accounts, devices, payment instruments, or recurring fraud methods.
- Preserve investigation records and supporting evidence in accordance with internal procedures and applicable data protection requirements.
- Escalate suspected criminal conduct, material losses, or significant control weaknesses through authorised reporting channels.
- Support the preparation of case information for legal, compliance, law enforcement, or other authorised requests where appropriate.
- Recommend improvements to fraud controls based on investigation findings and recurring incident patterns.
- Maintain accurate case records and meet agreed investigation deadlines and reporting standards.
Required Qualifications
- Relevant education in law, finance, accounting, criminology, business, cybersecurity, or a related discipline.
- Previous experience in fraud investigations, financial crime operations, banking disputes, insurance investigations, or a comparable analytical role is an advantage.
- Strong investigative reasoning and the ability to distinguish verified facts from assumptions.
- Experience reviewing documentary evidence, transaction records, customer statements, and case files.
- Clear report-writing skills and the ability to explain complex findings in a concise, professional manner.
- Good organisational skills and the ability to manage several active investigations.
- High ethical standards, discretion, and a disciplined approach to confidential information.
Preferred Skills
- Knowledge of common payment fraud methods, social engineering, identity theft, and account takeover schemes.
- Familiarity with AML processes, customer due diligence, and relevant financial crime escalation procedures.
- Experience with investigation databases, case-management systems, or digital evidence workflows.
- Understanding of the European financial services environment and applicable Estonian requirements.
Professional Contribution
You will help the organisation respond consistently to suspected fraud, improve the quality of investigation outcomes, and identify practical ways to reduce repeat incidents. The role provides opportunities to develop specialist expertise in financial crime investigation, case analysis, and fraud risk management.
Success in This Role: Investigations are timely, findings are supported by reliable evidence, records are complete, and recommendations contribute to stronger fraud controls and fair case resolution.
