Description
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced API Integration Engineer to develop, implement, and maintain secure integrations between financial platforms, banking systems, payment providers, and third-party services. The successful candidate will contribute to open banking capabilities, enabling reliable data exchange and payment-related functionality across interconnected financial applications.
This position requires a strong understanding of API engineering, financial data flows, authentication protocols, and integration reliability. You will collaborate with backend developers, security specialists, product teams, and external technology partners to deliver integrations that meet technical requirements and applicable regulatory standards.
Experience working with open banking services, PSD2-related integrations, or account information and payment initiation services will be particularly valuable.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and maintain RESTful API integrations between financial applications, banking platforms, and external service providers.
- Develop secure communication workflows using OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, and other appropriate authentication and authorization mechanisms.
- Integrate open banking interfaces for account information services and payment initiation where supported by the relevant provider and authorization model.
- Work with API specifications, including OpenAPI, to document endpoints, request and response structures, and integration requirements.
- Implement robust error handling, request validation, retry strategies, timeout management, and idempotency controls.
- Investigate integration failures, latency issues, inconsistent responses, and connectivity problems across distributed systems.
- Collaborate with security and compliance teams to support PSD2-related technical requirements, strong customer authentication workflows, and secure handling of financial data.
- Build automated tests for API endpoints, authentication flows, data mapping, and end-to-end integration scenarios.
- Monitor API performance and reliability through structured logging, metrics, tracing, and alerting.
- Maintain technical documentation and support integration testing with banking partners and third-party providers.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Degree or equivalent practical experience in software engineering, computer science, information systems, or a related discipline.
- Demonstrable experience in API development, systems integration, or backend engineering.
- Strong understanding of REST APIs, HTTP protocols, JSON, API versioning, and service-to-service communication.
- Practical knowledge of OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, access tokens, certificate-based authentication, or related security mechanisms.
- Experience with at least one backend programming language, such as Java, Kotlin, Python, C#, JavaScript, or TypeScript.
- Familiarity with SQL databases, distributed systems, automated testing, and version control.
- Understanding of API security, data privacy, secure credential management, and audit-friendly logging.
- Ability to diagnose technical problems systematically and communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Professional proficiency in English; knowledge of Estonian is an advantage.
Preferred Experience
Experience with PSD2 interfaces, Berlin Group NextGenPSD2 specifications, bank developer portals, financial data aggregation, payment initiation, or account information services is desirable. Familiarity with API gateways, message queues, containerized deployments, and CI/CD pipelines will also be beneficial.
What We Offer
- The opportunity to work on integrations that connect financial institutions with modern digital services.
- Exposure to open banking architecture, payment technologies, and secure financial data exchange.
- A collaborative engineering environment with opportunities to improve integration design and reliability.
- Competitive compensation aligned with professional experience and technical expertise.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented engineer who understands that financial integrations require more than successful API calls. You should be comfortable working with authentication, consent-based access, data consistency, error recovery, and partner-specific implementation requirements while maintaining a strong focus on security and reliability.
