Role Overview

We are looking for an experienced API Engineer to design, develop, and maintain robust application programming interfaces that support our digital products and internal platforms. You will collaborate with backend engineers, product managers, infrastructure specialists, and external partners to build well-documented, secure, and scalable API services.

The ideal candidate has strong backend development experience, understands API lifecycle management, and is committed to producing maintainable software that meets performance, security, and reliability requirements.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and maintain RESTful APIs and, where appropriate, GraphQL services.
• Define API contracts, request and response schemas, error-handling conventions, and versioning strategies.
• Develop backend services using technologies such as Java, Kotlin, C#, Python, Node.js, or Go.
• Implement authentication and authorization mechanisms using OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, API keys, or other appropriate standards.
• Improve API performance through efficient data access, caching, pagination, and asynchronous processing.
• Create and maintain API specifications using OpenAPI/Swagger and provide clear documentation for internal and external developers.
• Implement automated unit, integration, and contract tests to maintain compatibility and reduce regressions.
• Collaborate with DevOps and platform teams to support deployment automation, monitoring, logging, and incident resolution.
• Identify and address security vulnerabilities, reliability issues, and performance bottlenecks.
• Participate in architecture reviews and contribute to engineering standards, reusable components, and API governance.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
• Professional experience in backend development and API engineering.
• Strong understanding of REST principles, HTTP methods, status codes, JSON, and API versioning.
• Experience with at least one backend programming language, such as Java, Kotlin, C#, Python, TypeScript, or Go.
• Familiarity with relational and non-relational databases, caching, and distributed system concepts.
• Understanding of OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, access control, and secure API design.
• Experience with Git, automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, and API documentation tools.
• Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication abilities.
• Professional working proficiency in English; Estonian language skills are an advantage.
