Role Summary
The Remote Accounting Analyst — Accounts Reconciliation & Financial Data Integrity will be responsible for analysing accounting records, performing reconciliations, investigating transaction discrepancies, and supporting the maintenance of reliable financial data. The role will involve comparing information from accounting systems, bank statements, supplier records, customer accounts, payment reports, and other relevant sources.
The successful candidate will help identify timing differences, duplicate transactions, incorrect postings, missing entries, and unresolved balances. They will document investigation results, coordinate corrective actions with relevant stakeholders, and ensure that outstanding items are tracked through to resolution.
This position requires strong accounting fundamentals, confidence working with large datasets, and a structured approach to problem-solving. The analyst will also contribute to improving reconciliation procedures, strengthening data validation, and ensuring that financial records are complete and supported by an appropriate audit trail.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform regular reconciliations across general ledger accounts, bank statements, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payment records, and other financial data sources.
- Compare transactions across accounting systems, spreadsheets, bank records, and operational reports to identify missing entries, duplicate postings, timing differences, and inconsistent amounts.
- Investigate unreconciled items by reviewing transaction histories, invoices, payment references, journal entries, and other supporting documentation.
- Maintain accurate reconciliation schedules showing opening balances, transaction movements, outstanding items, adjustments, and closing balances.
- Track unresolved discrepancies, assign or coordinate follow-up actions with relevant teams, and monitor progress until appropriate resolution is documented.
- Review accounting entries for correct classification, completeness, and consistency with source documents and established accounting procedures.
- Assist with the preparation and review of journal entries required to correct identified accounting errors, subject to applicable approval controls.
- Reconcile customer and supplier balances, investigate disputed transactions, and work with accounts payable or accounts receivable colleagues to resolve differences.
- Compare payment processor reports, bank settlements, and recorded accounting entries where applicable, ensuring that transaction values and settlement movements are properly accounted for.
- Analyse recurring reconciliation issues to identify common causes, process weaknesses, data-quality problems, or gaps in supporting documentation.
- Support month-end and year-end closing by completing assigned reconciliations, confirming account balances, and escalating material unresolved items.
- Prepare reconciliation summaries, exception reports, ageing schedules, and other documentation for finance reviews and management reporting.
- Verify that financial data transferred between systems is complete and consistent, identifying interface errors, duplicate imports, missing records, or incorrect mappings.
- Maintain clear documentation of reconciliation methods, investigation steps, supporting evidence, and approved adjustments.
- Assist with internal and external audits by providing reconciliation schedules, transaction evidence, explanations of outstanding balances, and records of corrective actions.
- Work with finance, treasury, payments, procurement, and operational teams to clarify transaction details and resolve cross-functional accounting issues.
- Apply appropriate data checks when importing, cleaning, filtering, or consolidating financial information for analysis.
- Recommend improvements to reconciliation templates, automated checks, exception reporting, and standard operating procedures.
- Follow established access controls, confidentiality requirements, and data protection practices when working with financial and commercial information.
- Escalate material discrepancies, potential control weaknesses, suspected irregularities, and unresolved accounting risks through the appropriate internal channels.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Previous experience in accounting operations, account reconciliation, financial reporting, bookkeeping, or a related finance role.
- Strong understanding of double-entry bookkeeping, general ledger accounts, bank reconciliations, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and accounting adjustments.
- Experience investigating differences between financial systems, bank records, invoices, transaction reports, and supporting schedules.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets, including lookup functions, pivot tables, formulas, conditional checks, filtering, and data comparison.
- Familiarity with accounting platforms, enterprise resource planning systems, bank reconciliation tools, or financial data management software.
- Ability to work systematically with large transaction datasets and maintain accurate records of findings and corrections.
- Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to distinguish timing differences from genuine accounting errors and data-quality issues.
