A high-growth fintech organisation in Estonia is seeking a Principal Payments Engineer to design and evolve the technology powering secure, scalable, and high-volume financial transactions.

This is a senior individual-contributor role for an engineer who enjoys solving complex distributed-systems problems and wants significant influence over the architecture of modern payment infrastructure.

The Role

You will work across payment processing, transaction orchestration, financial integrations, reconciliation, and platform reliability. You will partner with engineering, product, security, data, and operations teams to build systems capable of supporting demanding financial workloads.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and develop highly scalable payment-processing services and transaction workflows.
• Establish technical patterns for payment orchestration, settlement, reconciliation, and external integrations.
• Build reliable APIs and event-driven services connecting internal and external financial systems.
• Improve platform resilience, latency, observability, and fault tolerance.
• Lead technical design reviews and provide architectural guidance to engineering teams.
• Identify performance bottlenecks and develop sustainable engineering solutions.
• Strengthen automated testing, CI/CD, deployment, and production engineering practices.
• Apply secure development principles to systems handling sensitive financial information.
• Investigate complex production incidents and contribute to long-term remediation.
• Mentor senior engineers and contribute to technical standards and engineering strategy.

Technical Experience

You should have strong experience with backend or platform engineering and distributed systems, together with practical knowledge of:

• Java, Kotlin, Go, Python, or a comparable backend language
• REST APIs and event-driven architectures
• SQL and distributed data systems
• Cloud platforms and containerised infrastructure
• Microservices and asynchronous processing
• Automated testing and CI/CD
• Observability and production operations

Experience within payments, banking, fintech, or other high-volume transaction environments is highly advantageous.
