Role Summary

The Senior Payment Gateway Integration Engineer will design, develop and maintain software integrations connecting payment gateways with merchant platforms, banking systems and external financial service providers.

The position involves developing API-based payment connections, improving transaction processing workflows and resolving technical issues affecting payment authorisation, settlement and transaction reporting. The successful candidate will collaborate with software engineers, product specialists, security professionals and payment operations teams to deliver reliable integration solutions.

The role requires strong software engineering experience, an understanding of payment processing architecture and the ability to build secure, scalable integrations within a fintech environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop and maintain integrations between payment gateways, merchant applications and financial service providers.

• Build and maintain RESTful APIs supporting payment initiation, transaction verification, refunds and settlement operations.

• Develop reliable communication processes between internal payment systems and external banking platforms.

• Implement secure authentication, encryption and data validation mechanisms across payment integrations.

• Investigate and resolve payment processing errors, failed API requests and transaction communication issues.

• Improve integration performance, system reliability and transaction processing efficiency.

• Collaborate with product teams to translate payment requirements into technical specifications.

• Conduct integration testing and validate transaction workflows before production releases.

• Monitor integration performance and investigate service interruptions or abnormal response patterns.

• Support the implementation of new payment methods and additional payment service providers.

• Maintain technical documentation covering API specifications, integration procedures and system dependencies.

• Participate in code reviews and recommend improvements to software quality and maintainability.

• Work with security specialists to identify and address vulnerabilities affecting payment integrations.

• Support the troubleshooting of production incidents and contribute to long-term technical improvements.

Requirements and Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related technical discipline.

• Several years of professional experience in backend engineering, payment technology or financial systems integration.

• Strong programming experience with Java, Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Go or comparable languages.

• Practical knowledge of REST APIs, webhooks, JSON and API authentication.

• Understanding of payment gateways, card processing and electronic transaction workflows.

• Experience working with relational databases and distributed application environments.

• Familiarity with cloud infrastructure, containerisation and CI/CD practices.

• Understanding of payment security principles and sensitive financial data handling.

• Strong debugging, problem-solving and analytical abilities.

• Ability to produce clear technical documentation and collaborate with distributed engineering teams.

• Experience integrating with multiple payment service providers is an advantage.
