Description
Position Summary
We are seeking a Financial Data Analyst to examine financial datasets, evaluate transaction patterns, monitor performance indicators, and support data-informed decisions across financial operations. The role involves working with transactional records, account-level information, reconciliation data, and financial performance reports to identify discrepancies, emerging trends, and potential areas of operational risk.
You will collaborate with finance professionals, risk analysts, operations teams, and technical specialists to ensure that analytical outputs are accurate, relevant, and clearly documented. This position is particularly suitable for candidates with experience in banking, payments, fintech, lending, digital financial services, or transaction-intensive businesses.
The successful applicant will demonstrate strong analytical discipline, an understanding of financial data, and the ability to investigate irregularities without drawing conclusions unsupported by the evidence.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyse transaction records, payment activity, financial performance data, and operational datasets to identify patterns and anomalies.
- Develop SQL queries and analytical workflows to retrieve, reconcile, and validate financial information.
- Prepare recurring reports covering transaction volumes, processing outcomes, operational exceptions, revenue indicators, and other relevant financial metrics.
- Investigate mismatches between transaction records, settlement information, account balances, and reporting outputs.
- Identify unusual data patterns and refer potentially significant discrepancies to the appropriate risk, compliance, or operational teams.
- Support the development of analytical indicators used to monitor transaction quality, payment failures, processing delays, and operational performance.
- Assist with the preparation of financial dashboards and management reports using Power BI, Tableau, Excel, or comparable tools.
- Perform data quality checks to identify missing records, duplicate entries, inconsistent values, and incomplete transaction information.
- Work with technical teams to improve the accessibility, reliability, and consistency of financial datasets.
- Support periodic reporting, audit requests, and analytical investigations by providing traceable calculations and documented findings.
- Maintain clear records of data sources, assumptions, analytical methods, and reporting changes.
- Handle confidential financial information in accordance with internal security policies and applicable data protection requirements.
Required Qualifications
- Degree or equivalent practical experience in finance, economics, statistics, mathematics, accounting, data analytics, or a related discipline.
- Professional experience in data analysis, financial reporting, transaction analytics, or a comparable analytical function.
- Strong SQL skills, including joins, aggregations, filtering, and analytical queries across multiple tables.
- Advanced Excel skills and experience preparing structured reports from complex datasets.
- Experience with a data visualisation or business intelligence platform, such as Power BI or Tableau.
- Understanding of financial transactions, reconciliations, payment flows, or financial performance metrics.
- Ability to investigate discrepancies systematically and distinguish confirmed findings from potential risks requiring further review.
- Strong numerical accuracy, analytical judgement, and attention to detail.
- Ability to explain findings clearly to finance, operations, risk, and technology stakeholders.
- Professional proficiency in English.
Preferred Experience
Experience in payment processing, digital banking, electronic money services, transaction monitoring, lending analytics, or financial reconciliation is an advantage. Knowledge of Python or R, statistical analysis, data warehousing, and automated reporting will also be beneficial.
Familiarity with GDPR, financial data governance, audit trails, and risk-control processes is desirable. Experience with fraud analytics or anti-money laundering data may be useful, although this is an analytical role rather than a dedicated compliance position.
Key Performance Expectations
The successful candidate will be expected to produce accurate and reproducible analyses, maintain reliable reporting processes, identify data quality issues promptly, and provide useful insights into financial and operational performance. Recommendations should be supported by clear evidence, with assumptions and limitations appropriately documented.
What We Offer
- The opportunity to work with meaningful financial and transaction data.
- Exposure to financial analytics, payment operations, risk indicators, and data quality processes.
- Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams across finance, operations, risk, and technology.
- Opportunities to strengthen technical skills in SQL, business intelligence, and analytical automation.
- Competitive compensation based on relevant experience, technical skills, and the responsibilities of the role.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate combines financial awareness with a disciplined, evidence-based approach to data analysis. You should be comfortable working with detailed transaction records, investigating inconsistencies, protecting sensitive information, and presenting findings that help teams improve financial reporting and operational control.
Application
Please submit a current CV detailing your analytical experience, relevant software skills, and exposure to financial or transaction datasets. Examples of reporting projects, dashboards, or analytical work may be included where appropriate and without disclosing confidential information.
