Description
Company Overview
The organisation operates in the fintech and digital commerce sector, where secure payment processing and effective fraud prevention are essential to protecting customers, merchants, and financial operations. Its activities involve analysing payment-related risks, reviewing suspicious transaction patterns, supporting dispute investigations, and improving controls across electronic payment channels.
Digital payment services such as PayPal have made online transactions more accessible, but they also create operational challenges involving account misuse, unauthorised payments, social engineering, payment disputes, and other forms of financial abuse. The organisation therefore places importance on evidence-based risk assessment, accurate case documentation, and timely escalation.
Role Summary
The Digital Payments Risk Analyst will assess transaction activity, investigate potential fraud indicators, and support the development and ongoing improvement of controls designed to reduce payment-related losses. The analyst will examine transaction data, account activity, dispute information, and available customer context to identify cases that require further review.
The position requires a balanced approach to risk: suspicious patterns must be investigated carefully, but legitimate customers should not be unnecessarily affected by unsupported assumptions. The successful candidate will document findings objectively, follow approved investigation procedures, and escalate higher-risk cases to the appropriate fraud, compliance, or risk personnel.
Experience with PayPal transactions, online merchant payments, payment disputes, or comparable digital financial platforms is advantageous. The role is suitable for a professional with strong analytical skills, sound judgement, and an interest in the intersection of fintech, digital commerce, and financial crime prevention.
Key Responsibilities
- Review payment activity and transaction-monitoring alerts to identify patterns that may indicate unauthorised transactions, account compromise, or payment abuse.
- Analyse transaction amounts, frequencies, timing, account history, and available contextual information to assess potential risk.
- Investigate cases involving unusual payment behaviour, repeated failed transactions, suspicious refund activity, disputed purchases, or inconsistent account information.
- Support fraud investigations by gathering relevant transaction records, payment references, dispute histories, and supporting documentation.
- Assess payment disputes and chargeback cases to identify recurring risk indicators and help determine whether additional review is required.
- Examine available information for potential account takeover, misuse of compromised payment credentials, social engineering, or other common online payment threats.
- Distinguish between confirmed policy breaches, credible risk indicators, and cases that require additional evidence before conclusions can be reached.
- Document investigation findings, supporting evidence, risk assessments, and recommended next steps in the appropriate case-management system.
- Escalate high-risk cases, potential financial crime concerns, and incidents requiring specialist investigation in accordance with internal procedures.
- Work with payment operations and customer support teams to resolve cases where fraud controls, customer complaints, and transaction processing issues overlap.
- Support the review of transaction-risk rules and monitoring procedures by identifying recurring patterns, control gaps, and opportunities for improvement.
- Analyse historical case data to identify trends in disputes, fraudulent payment attempts, account misuse, and operational weaknesses.
- Prepare periodic reports summarising risk indicators, investigation outcomes, dispute trends, and recommended control improvements.
- Assist with quality-assurance reviews to evaluate the consistency and accuracy of case assessments.
- Maintain clear audit trails and ensure that decisions are supported by relevant evidence and documented rationale.
- Follow applicable privacy, data-protection, information-security, and record-retention requirements when handling payment information.
- Contribute to updates of internal fraud-prevention guidance, case-handling procedures, and risk assessment documentation.
- Communicate risk findings clearly to stakeholders who may not have specialist knowledge of fraud analytics or payment systems.
Requirements and Qualifications
- A degree, diploma, or equivalent professional experience in finance, economics, accounting, data analytics, criminology, business, information systems, or a related field.
- Experience in fraud analysis, payment risk, transaction monitoring, chargeback operations, financial services, or digital commerce.
- Familiarity with PayPal or comparable payment platforms and their transaction or dispute workflows is beneficial.
- Understanding of online payment fraud, account takeover, unauthorised transactions, social engineering, and common digital commerce risks.
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to evaluate transaction patterns using multiple sources of information.
- Proficiency with spreadsheets and data analysis; experience with SQL, business intelligence tools, or risk dashboards is an advantage.
- Ability to review case information objectively, recognise inconsistencies, and document defensible conclusions.
- Familiarity with case-management systems, investigation workflows, or fraud-monitoring tools.
- Understanding of escalation procedures, evidence handling, confidentiality, and risk-based decision-making.
- Strong written communication skills, particularly when preparing investigation summaries and risk reports.
- Ability to manage multiple investigations, prioritise time-sensitive cases, and maintain accuracy under pressure.
- A responsible approach to handling customer information and sensitive financial records.
- Ability to work independently in a remote setting and collaborate with operations, compliance, customer service, and technical teams.
- Relevant training or qualifications in fraud prevention, financial crime, risk management, or data analytics are an advantage.
Technical Environment
The analyst may work with transaction-monitoring dashboards, payment-provider reporting tools, fraud case-management systems, spreadsheet software, SQL-based data sources, and business intelligence platforms. Familiarity with data visualisation, rule-based alerting, and structured investigation records is beneficial.
Benefits
- Remote working within Estonia.
- Full-time, permanent employment.
- Opportunities to develop expertise in payment risk analysis and digital fraud prevention.
- Exposure to transaction monitoring, dispute investigations, risk reporting, and online payment controls.
- Collaboration with risk, compliance, operations, and customer support specialists.
