Description

About the Role

We are looking for a Backend Software Engineer to help build and improve cloud-based services that support business applications, digital platforms, and data-intensive workloads. This role focuses on backend architecture, service integration, scalability, and operational reliability.

The successful candidate will contribute throughout the software development lifecycle, from technical design and implementation to testing, deployment, and production support. You will work with engineers to develop services that remain responsive under increasing workloads while maintaining clear interfaces, consistent data handling, and high standards of code quality.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Develop modular backend services using appropriate programming languages, frameworks, and architectural patterns.

  • Design APIs and service interfaces that enable secure communication between internal systems and external applications.

  • Implement asynchronous processing, background jobs, event-driven workflows, and messaging integrations where appropriate.

  • Build and maintain database structures, indexing strategies, and efficient data-access layers.

  • Support the deployment and operation of containerised applications in cloud environments.

  • Investigate latency, resource consumption, service failures, and other performance issues.

  • Introduce automated unit, integration, and service-level tests to improve software reliability.

  • Contribute to system observability through structured logging, metrics, alerts, and troubleshooting procedures.

  • Participate in architectural discussions and recommend practical improvements to system design.

  • Maintain technical documentation covering APIs, service dependencies, deployment procedures, and operational requirements.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • A degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline, or equivalent industry experience.

  • Demonstrable experience building production backend applications.

  • Strong proficiency in at least one backend language, such as Java, Go, Python, C#, or TypeScript with Node.js.

  • Experience with SQL databases and a sound understanding of data modelling and transaction management.

  • Knowledge of REST APIs, microservices, asynchronous processing, and distributed-system fundamentals.

  • Familiarity with Linux environments, Git, Docker, and automated deployment workflows.

  • Understanding of caching, concurrency, fault handling, and application performance.

  • Ability to troubleshoot complex technical problems and communicate findings clearly.

Desirable Experience

Experience with Kubernetes, message brokers, cloud infrastructure, infrastructure as code, or observability platforms would be beneficial. Familiarity with security-conscious development and privacy-aware data processing is also an advantage.

Performance Expectations

The successful engineer will be expected to deliver maintainable code, contribute constructively to technical reviews, improve service stability, and identify opportunities to simplify complex systems. Particular emphasis will be placed on engineering judgement, effective testing, and a willingness to take responsibility for the quality of delivered software.

Why Join This Opportunity?

This position offers the chance to work on technically challenging backend systems while strengthening expertise in cloud infrastructure, service architecture, and production engineering. It is suitable for an engineer who enjoys solving complex problems and building software designed for long-term reliability.

Ideal Candidate: A technically curious software engineer who understands that good backend development requires more than writing code—it requires thoughtful design, effective testing, and dependable operation in production.
