Description
Company Overview
The organisation operates within a technology-driven financial markets environment, with a focus on foreign exchange (FX) market analysis, quantitative research, and systematic approaches to understanding currency price movements. Its work combines financial market data, statistical techniques, and computational tools to support research into exchange-rate behaviour, liquidity conditions, volatility, and trading strategy performance.
The quantitative research function collaborates with trading, risk management, data engineering, and technology teams to develop reliable analytical methods and evaluate their practical application. The organisation values rigorous research, transparent methodologies, strong data governance, and disciplined assessment of financial market risk.
Role Summary
The FX Quantitative Research Analyst will investigate foreign exchange market behaviour, develop quantitative models, and analyse currency price movements to identify statistically meaningful patterns. The role involves researching exchange-rate dynamics, evaluating trading hypotheses, conducting historical simulations, and interpreting the results of quantitative experiments.
The successful candidate will combine strong mathematical reasoning with programming capabilities and an understanding of FX market structure. They will contribute to research covering major and selected minor currency pairs, volatility patterns, macroeconomic influences, and systematic trading signals. The position requires a careful approach to model validation, realistic transaction-cost assumptions, and the limitations of historical market data.
Key Responsibilities
-
Analyse historical and current FX market data to investigate exchange-rate movements, volatility patterns, liquidity characteristics, and relationships between currency pairs.
-
Develop and test quantitative hypotheses concerning currency returns, momentum, mean reversion, carry, market microstructure, and other relevant FX phenomena.
-
Build statistical models and analytical frameworks to evaluate market behaviour across different time horizons and market regimes.
-
Conduct exploratory data analysis to identify data inconsistencies, unusual observations, structural changes, and potential sources of bias.
-
Design and implement backtesting procedures for FX trading signals, incorporating realistic assumptions about spreads, slippage, execution delays, and transaction costs.
-
Evaluate strategy performance using appropriate statistical measures, including risk-adjusted returns, maximum drawdown, volatility, turnover, and stability across market conditions.
-
Apply time-series methods, regression analysis, statistical inference, and other suitable quantitative techniques to foreign exchange research.
-
Investigate the relationship between macroeconomic announcements, interest-rate expectations, central bank decisions, and currency market behaviour.
-
Compare the behaviour of currency pairs during different liquidity conditions, volatility environments, and periods of market stress.
-
Develop reusable research scripts, analytical libraries, and automated reporting tools using Python or comparable quantitative programming technologies.
-
Collaborate with traders and quantitative developers to assess the practical feasibility of research findings and their potential integration into trading workflows.
-
Support out-of-sample testing, walk-forward analysis, sensitivity testing, and other validation procedures designed to assess model robustness.
-
Document research objectives, data sources, model assumptions, experimental procedures, findings, and limitations.
-
Monitor the performance of approved quantitative models and investigate material differences between expected and observed behaviour.
-
Contribute to improvements in research data quality, analytical reproducibility, and model governance practices.
Requirements and Qualifications
-
Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Physics, Computer Science, Financial Engineering, or a closely related quantitative discipline.
-
Relevant experience in quantitative research, FX analytics, systematic trading, financial modelling, or a comparable analytical role.
-
Strong understanding of foreign exchange markets, including currency pairs, exchange-rate conventions, spreads, liquidity, volatility, and market drivers.
-
Proficiency in Python for statistical analysis, data manipulation, research automation, and quantitative modelling.
-
Experience with libraries such as pandas, NumPy, SciPy, statsmodels, or equivalent analytical tools.
-
Knowledge of time-series analysis, probability, statistical inference, regression methods, and hypothesis testing.
-
Experience conducting backtests and evaluating trading strategies using realistic market and transaction-cost assumptions.
-
Understanding of overfitting, look-ahead bias, data leakage, and the importance of out-of-sample validation.
-
Familiarity with SQL, relational databases, or financial market data infrastructure.
-
Ability to interpret quantitative findings and communicate technical conclusions clearly to researchers, traders, and other stakeholders.
-
Strong analytical judgement, attention to detail, and a disciplined approach to documenting research.
-
Ability to manage research tasks independently while collaborating with a geographically distributed team.
Benefits
-
Remote working opportunity within Estonia, subject to employment eligibility and organisational requirements.
-
Exposure to quantitative FX research, financial market analytics, and systematic trading methodologies.
-
Opportunities to develop expertise in statistical modelling, currency market behaviour, and quantitative strategy evaluation.
-
Collaboration with professionals across trading, quantitative development, data engineering, and risk management.
-
Access to relevant analytical systems and research tools required for assigned responsibilities.
-
Opportunities to contribute to the improvement of research methodologies and model-validation practices.
-
A professional environment that supports continuous learning, analytical integrity, and evidence-based decision-making.
Application Instructions
Applicants should submit an up-to-date CV highlighting their quantitative research experience, programming skills, understanding of FX markets, and relevant financial modelling projects. Candidates may include examples of research involving currency time series, statistical modelling, trading strategy backtesting, or market volatility analysis, provided they do not disclose confidential information.
Applications should be submitted through the recruiting organisation’s official application channel. Shortlisted candidates may be invited to discuss a quantitative research project, explain their validation methodology, or demonstrate how they would assess the reliability of a statistical relationship observed in historical FX data.
