Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Senior Payment Systems Engineer to design, develop, and maintain reliable payment infrastructure supporting digital transactions, merchant services, account-to-account transfers, and online financial products. The successful candidate will contribute to the technical architecture behind secure, scalable, and high-performance payment services used by customers and business partners.

This position is suited to a software engineering professional with strong backend development capabilities, experience integrating financial services, and an understanding of transaction processing in modern fintech environments. Working remotely with engineering, product, security, and payment operations teams, the engineer will help improve transaction reliability, reduce processing failures, and support the introduction of new payment capabilities.

The role combines hands-on software development with technical problem-solving, system optimization, and continuous improvement of payment infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain backend services responsible for payment initiation, transaction validation, authorization, processing, and status management.

• Build and maintain APIs that connect payment applications with banks, payment service providers, merchant platforms, and external financial systems.

• Implement reliable transaction-processing mechanisms, including idempotency, duplicate-payment prevention, error handling, and transaction-state management.

• Develop and optimize integrations for card payments, bank transfers, digital wallets, and other supported payment methods.

• Improve system performance, scalability, availability, and resilience across distributed payment-processing environments.

• Investigate complex production incidents, analyze logs and transaction traces, and implement sustainable technical fixes.

• Collaborate with security specialists to strengthen authentication, access controls, encryption, and protection of sensitive payment data.

• Contribute to automated testing, code reviews, deployment pipelines, and technical documentation.

• Work with payment operations and reconciliation teams to resolve discrepancies between transaction records and settlement information.

• Support monitoring and alerting systems that identify processing delays, service interruptions, and abnormal transaction patterns.

• Participate in technical planning for new payment features and improvements to existing financial products.

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or equivalent professional experience.

• At least four years of relevant software engineering experience, preferably involving payment systems, banking platforms, or financial services.

• Strong programming experience in Java, Kotlin, Go, Python, C#, or TypeScript.

• Practical knowledge of REST APIs, relational databases, distributed systems, and event-driven architectures.

• Experience with PostgreSQL or similar databases, automated testing, version control, and CI/CD workflows.

• Familiarity with cloud infrastructure, containerization, application monitoring, and production support.

• Understanding of transaction lifecycles, payment reconciliation, secure software design, and failure recovery.

• Knowledge of PCI DSS, PSD2-related payment requirements, or relevant European payment standards is advantageous where applicable.

• Strong analytical skills, clear technical communication, and the ability to work independently in a distributed team.

Technical Environment

The role may involve microservices, cloud platforms, message queues, relational databases, API gateways, automated deployment tools, and payment monitoring systems. Experience with AWS, Azure, Kubernetes, or comparable technologies is beneficial.
