Description

The Opportunity

An opportunity is available for an Open Banking API Engineer to support the technical connectivity between financial service applications and banking institutions. The role centres on API implementation, secure access to banking data, payment-related connectivity, and the development of robust interfaces for third-party financial services.

You will help translate banking API specifications into working integrations, coordinate technical testing with external providers, and improve the reliability of existing connectivity services. This requires a combination of software engineering capability, knowledge of API security, and an appreciation of the technical and operational requirements associated with regulated financial services.

The position is appropriate for engineers with experience in open banking, payment technology, financial data platforms, or secure API ecosystems.

Key Areas of Responsibility

API implementation and connectivity

  • Implement and maintain integrations with bank APIs, account information services, payment initiation services, and other approved financial data providers.
  • Interpret API specifications and translate them into maintainable application code and integration workflows.
  • Manage request construction, response parsing, data validation, pagination, version compatibility, and provider-specific error handling.
  • Develop reusable API clients, adapters, and integration libraries that reduce duplication across banking connections.

Authentication and API security

  • Implement authorization flows using OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect where supported by the relevant interface.
  • Support secure certificate configuration, token renewal, and credential management in accordance with provider requirements.
  • Work with strong customer authentication flows and consent-related processes where applicable.
  • Ensure sensitive financial data is handled securely throughout transmission, processing, storage, and logging.
  • Collaborate with security specialists to investigate vulnerabilities and improve integration controls.

PSD2 and technical standards

  • Work with PSD2-related API requirements and applicable European technical standards.
  • Interpret provider documentation and standards such as Berlin Group NextGenPSD2 when relevant to the integration.
  • Support sandbox testing, conformance checks, troubleshooting, and production readiness assessments.
  • Identify differences between banking providers and implement appropriate compatibility measures.
  • Coordinate technical issue resolution with banking partners and external API providers.

Testing and operational support

  • Create automated tests covering authentication, API responses, failure scenarios, and data integrity.
  • Monitor integration health, response times, error rates, and availability.
  • Investigate failed requests, expired credentials, rate limiting, inconsistent responses, and provider outages.
  • Maintain clear documentation for integration behaviour, configuration, dependencies, and operational recovery.
  • Participate in incident analysis and implement corrective actions to reduce recurring failures.

Required Qualifications

  • Relevant experience in API engineering, backend software development, or financial systems integration.
  • Strong understanding of REST APIs, HTTP methods and status codes, JSON, and API documentation.
  • Practical programming experience in Java, Kotlin, Python, TypeScript, C#, or a comparable language.
  • Familiarity with OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, TLS, access-token security, and certificate-based authentication concepts.
  • Knowledge of API testing tools and automated testing practices.
  • Ability to troubleshoot distributed application behaviour using logs, metrics, and diagnostic tools.
  • Understanding of data privacy, secure development, and appropriate handling of financial information.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Previous work with PSD2 interfaces or open banking implementations.
  • Familiarity with Berlin Group NextGenPSD2, bank-specific API specifications, or financial data aggregation services.
  • Experience with payment initiation, account information retrieval, consent lifecycle management, or strong customer authentication.
  • Knowledge of API gateways, containerization, cloud environments, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience coordinating integration testing with banks, payment service providers, or other external technical partners.

Measures of Success

Performance in this role will be assessed through the quality and reliability of delivered integrations, the effectiveness of automated testing, the reduction of recurring connectivity issues, and the accuracy of technical documentation. The engineer should also contribute to secure implementation practices and timely resolution of partner integration problems.

Why Consider This Role?

This opportunity provides hands-on exposure to European open banking infrastructure and the engineering practices required to connect financial services securely. It offers scope to deepen expertise in API architecture, authentication, banking connectivity, and payment technology while contributing directly to dependable digital financial services.

Application Requirements

Please provide a current CV outlining your API development and integration experience, relevant programming technologies, and any open banking or PSD2 projects. Applicants may also include examples of API integrations or technical projects that demonstrate their approach to security, testing, and integration reliability.
