Description
Company Overview
The organisation develops and supports technology-driven financial services that depend on scalable applications, secure integrations, and consistent software delivery. As engineering teams build and maintain more services, the underlying infrastructure must provide reliable deployment capabilities, standardised environments, clear operational visibility, and appropriate security controls.
A well-designed internal platform enables software engineers to concentrate on application development without repeatedly solving the same infrastructure, configuration, and deployment problems. It also helps improve consistency across services, simplify operational support, and establish shared standards for production readiness.
The organisation is seeking a Platform Engineer to help develop and maintain the infrastructure services, automation frameworks, and developer tooling that support its engineering teams. The successful candidate will contribute to a platform that makes common engineering tasks easier to perform while preserving reliability, security, and operational control.
Role Summary
The Platform Engineer will design, implement, and maintain shared infrastructure capabilities used by application development and operations teams. Responsibilities will include Kubernetes platform administration, deployment tooling, reusable infrastructure components, developer self-service workflows, environment management, and the integration of security and observability into standard engineering processes.
The position requires a balance of infrastructure expertise and an understanding of developer experience. Rather than treating the platform as a collection of servers and configuration files, the successful candidate will help create reusable services and workflows that make it easier for engineering teams to build, test, deploy, monitor, and operate applications.
The role will involve collaborating with DevOps engineers, SREs, software developers, and security teams to identify recurring technical challenges and turn them into standardised platform capabilities. These may include reusable deployment templates, automated environment provisioning, service configuration standards, infrastructure modules, and self-service tools for common operational tasks.
The ideal candidate is comfortable working with container platforms, cloud-native infrastructure, automation, and developer tooling, and can make technical decisions that support both immediate engineering needs and long-term platform maintainability.
Key Responsibilities
-
Platform architecture and maintenance: Develop and maintain shared infrastructure services that support application deployment, service discovery, configuration management, monitoring, and production operations.
-
Kubernetes operations: Configure, maintain, and improve Kubernetes clusters, workloads, namespaces, access policies, resource limits, networking, and deployment standards.
-
Developer self-service: Build tools and workflows that allow developers to provision approved resources, create service environments, and perform routine deployment tasks with reduced manual assistance.
-
Reusable infrastructure components: Develop and maintain standard infrastructure modules, service templates, configuration patterns, and deployment blueprints that can be reused across engineering projects.
-
Internal developer tooling: Improve command-line tools, deployment interfaces, automation scripts, and engineering workflows that simplify common development and operational activities.
-
Infrastructure as code: Apply version-controlled infrastructure management practices using tools such as Terraform, OpenTofu, Helm, or comparable technologies.
-
Application delivery integration: Work with CI/CD systems to establish consistent build, test, deployment, and release processes across supported applications and environments.
-
Container management: Maintain container build standards, image management practices, deployment configurations, and resource policies for containerised services.
-
Platform observability: Integrate logging, metrics, tracing, health checks, and alerting into platform services so that developers can understand service performance and operational behaviour.
-
Security by design: Implement suitable access controls, secrets management, network policies, image scanning, and workload security standards in collaboration with security specialists.
-
Platform reliability: Monitor platform health, investigate service disruptions, identify capacity constraints, and implement improvements that strengthen availability and resilience.
-
Configuration standardisation: Reduce configuration drift by introducing consistent methods for managing application settings, environment-specific parameters, infrastructure policies, and deployment dependencies.
-
Developer onboarding: Improve technical documentation, service templates, environment setup instructions, and onboarding workflows so new engineers can become productive more efficiently.
-
Platform lifecycle management: Plan and execute platform upgrades, dependency updates, configuration changes, and infrastructure maintenance with appropriate testing and rollback procedures.
-
Technical support: Help engineering teams resolve platform-related issues involving deployments, permissions, networking, service configuration, resource allocation, and infrastructure dependencies.
-
Performance and cost management: Evaluate platform resource utilisation and recommend improvements to scheduling, scaling, resource allocation, and infrastructure efficiency.
-
Engineering standards: Document recommended platform patterns, operational expectations, and reusable solutions to promote consistency across the engineering organisation.
