Description

Company Overview

The organisation operates in a professional business environment where reliable financial information, disciplined accounting procedures, and accurate reporting are essential to effective decision-making. Its finance function supports daily operations by maintaining financial records, monitoring account balances, reviewing transactions, and producing reports that help internal stakeholders understand business performance.

The organisation values transparency, accountability, data accuracy, and continuous improvement. It seeks an analytical accounting professional who can work methodically with financial information, investigate discrepancies, and contribute to consistent reporting standards across the business.

Role Summary

The Remote Accounting Analyst will support general ledger accounting, financial reconciliations, month-end closing activities, and the preparation of management reports. The successful candidate will analyse accounting data, verify the accuracy of recorded transactions, investigate unusual balances, and ensure that financial information is supported by appropriate documentation.

Working closely with finance colleagues and relevant business departments, the analyst will help maintain accurate ledger accounts, monitor movements in income and expenses, and identify differences between accounting records and supporting schedules. The role requires a combination of technical accounting knowledge, analytical thinking, spreadsheet proficiency, and strong attention to detail.

The ideal candidate will be comfortable managing recurring accounting deadlines remotely, documenting findings clearly, and recommending practical improvements to reporting and reconciliation processes. The position offers an opportunity to contribute directly to the reliability of financial information used for operational planning and business decisions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Analyse general ledger transactions to verify correct account classification, appropriate supporting documentation, and consistency with established accounting policies.
  • Perform regular reconciliations of balance sheet accounts, including bank accounts, accounts receivable, accounts payable, accrued expenses, prepayments, and other relevant balances.
  • Investigate unexplained account movements, unusual transactions, duplicate entries, and discrepancies between the general ledger and supporting records.
  • Assist with month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing procedures by preparing reconciliations, reviewing journal entries, and ensuring that outstanding accounting items are identified.
  • Prepare and review journal entries for accruals, prepayments, reclassifications, corrections, and other routine accounting adjustments, subject to the appropriate approval procedures.
  • Analyse revenue and expense movements across reporting periods, identifying significant variances and preparing explanations for review by the finance team.
  • Maintain supporting schedules for key ledger accounts and ensure that reconciliations are completed, reviewed, and retained in accordance with internal procedures.
  • Review invoices, expense records, payment documentation, and other accounting source materials to confirm completeness and appropriate treatment.
  • Support the preparation of monthly management accounts, financial statements, internal reporting packs, and other financial summaries.
  • Compare actual financial results with budgets, forecasts, and prior-period results, highlighting material differences and potential areas requiring further investigation.
  • Coordinate with accounts payable, accounts receivable, treasury, and operational teams to resolve accounting questions and obtain missing documentation.
  • Monitor outstanding reconciliation items and follow up with responsible stakeholders to ensure that unresolved differences are addressed within agreed timelines.
  • Assist in maintaining the chart of accounts, accounting master data, and financial reporting classifications.
  • Support the application of relevant accounting standards and internal accounting policies, escalating complex technical accounting questions when specialist guidance is required.
  • Contribute to audit preparation by organising supporting schedules, transaction records, reconciliation evidence, and explanations requested by internal or external reviewers.
  • Use spreadsheets and accounting systems to organise financial data, perform calculations, identify patterns, and improve the consistency of reporting outputs.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline recurring accounting procedures, reduce manual errors, and strengthen documentation and reconciliation controls.
  • Maintain appropriate confidentiality when accessing financial records, business information, and other sensitive organisational data.
