Role Summary

The Contract Web Developer will be responsible for developing, enhancing, and maintaining web applications across both frontend and backend components. The role involves interpreting project requirements, implementing application features, integrating APIs, managing data flows, resolving technical issues, and ensuring that completed work meets agreed functionality and quality standards.

Working remotely, the developer will collaborate with designers, project coordinators, product stakeholders, and other engineers to deliver defined project milestones within an agreed contract period. Assignments may include developing new application features, improving existing websites, creating administrative interfaces, connecting external services, optimising application performance, and resolving defects identified during testing.

The successful candidate will be comfortable working independently while maintaining transparent communication about progress, technical decisions, dependencies, and delivery risks. They should understand the importance of producing maintainable code, following established development practices, and documenting work so that other team members can support the application after the contract ends.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain responsive web applications based on approved technical specifications and business requirements.
• Build frontend interfaces using suitable technologies such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, TypeScript, and modern frameworks including React, Vue, or comparable alternatives.
• Develop backend services, application logic, and server-side functionality using relevant technologies such as Node.js, Python, PHP, Java, or other established frameworks.
• Design and integrate RESTful APIs and, where appropriate, GraphQL interfaces to support communication between frontend applications, backend services, and external platforms.
• Implement database structures, queries, and data-handling processes using relational or document-oriented databases as required by the project.
• Collaborate with designers and stakeholders to translate interface designs, wireframes, and functional specifications into working web experiences.
• Ensure that web applications provide consistent functionality across commonly used browsers, screen sizes, and supported devices.
• Implement appropriate authentication, authorisation, input validation, error handling, and secure data-processing practices.
• Identify and resolve software defects, integration problems, performance bottlenecks, and compatibility issues.
• Write clean, maintainable, and appropriately structured code that follows the project’s established conventions and architectural standards.
• Participate in code reviews, technical discussions, and development planning sessions when required.
• Develop and maintain unit tests, integration tests, and other relevant quality checks to reduce regressions.
• Use version-control systems such as Git to manage source code, review changes, and coordinate development work.
• Work with deployment pipelines and relevant hosting environments to prepare, test, and release approved application changes.
• Monitor application behaviour during testing and support the resolution of issues discovered after deployment.
• Maintain technical documentation covering application functionality, configuration requirements, API integrations, and significant implementation decisions.
• Estimate assigned development tasks, track progress against milestones, and communicate risks that may affect delivery.
• Coordinate with project stakeholders to clarify requirements, resolve technical questions, and manage changes to agreed scope.
• Recommend improvements to code quality, application performance, maintainability, and the overall development process.
• Prepare a structured handover of completed work, including relevant documentation, outstanding issues, and deployment instructions.

Requirements and Qualifications

• Demonstrable professional experience in web development, software engineering, or full-stack application development.
• A degree, diploma, or equivalent practical experience in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field.
• Strong knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and modern web development practices.
• Experience with at least one modern frontend framework and one backend technology suitable for the project.
• Practical experience building or integrating APIs and working with application data.
• Familiarity with relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL and an understanding of database design principles.
• Knowledge of responsive design, browser compatibility, accessibility fundamentals, and web performance optimisation.
• Understanding of web security principles, including secure authentication, access control, input validation, and protection against common application vulnerabilities.
• Experience using Git and collaborative software development workflows.
• Familiarity with automated testing, debugging tools, code review processes, and deployment procedures.
• Ability to interpret technical requirements and break complex assignments into manageable development tasks.
• Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to investigate unfamiliar codebases.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively in a remote environment.
• Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and deliver against agreed milestones.
• A portfolio, Git repository, or examples of previous web development projects may be requested, subject to confidentiality restrictions.
