Description

Position Overview

We are looking for a Currency Strategist with a strong analytical background to develop data-driven foreign exchange forecasts and investigate the economic and statistical factors behind currency movements. The role combines quantitative research, macroeconomic interpretation, and market monitoring to improve the quality of currency outlooks and support evidence-based decision-making.

The successful candidate will investigate relationships between interest rates, inflation, economic growth, volatility, market positioning, and exchange-rate performance. They will also contribute to forecasting frameworks, analytical dashboards, and systematic evaluation processes that help distinguish reliable market signals from short-lived fluctuations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain analytical frameworks for forecasting exchange rates across selected currency pairs.

  • Investigate the relationship between macroeconomic variables, interest-rate differentials, risk sentiment, and currency returns.

  • Apply statistical methods to evaluate historical relationships, forecast performance, volatility patterns, and potential regime changes.

  • Develop scenario models to assess how alternative central bank decisions and economic outcomes may affect currency valuations.

  • Analyse FX time-series data and identify trends, correlations, anomalies, and changes in market behaviour.

  • Use Python, R, or comparable tools to automate research workflows, process market datasets, and generate analytical reports.

  • Develop dashboards and visualisations that communicate currency performance, forecast confidence, and relevant economic indicators.

  • Compare model-based forecasts with fundamental assessments and market-implied expectations.

  • Conduct backtesting and sensitivity analysis while accounting for transaction costs, data limitations, and the risk of overfitting.

  • Monitor forecast errors and update model assumptions when economic relationships or market conditions change.

  • Work with FX trading, technology, and risk teams to ensure research outputs are relevant, interpretable, and operationally useful.

  • Document data sources, modelling assumptions, validation procedures, and limitations to support reproducibility.

Qualifications and Technical Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Economics, Econometrics, Finance, Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science, or a related quantitative discipline.

  • Typically 3–6 years of experience in quantitative financial research, FX analytics, economic forecasting, or related market analysis.

  • Strong understanding of foreign exchange markets, macroeconomic indicators, monetary policy, and financial time-series behaviour.

  • Practical experience with Python or R for data analysis, statistical modelling, and research automation.

  • Proficiency in SQL and experience working with structured financial or economic datasets.

  • Familiarity with statistical techniques such as regression analysis, time-series modelling, hypothesis testing, and out-of-sample validation.

  • Knowledge of machine-learning methods for financial forecasting is advantageous, provided their limitations are understood.

  • Experience with Excel, data visualisation tools, and financial-market data platforms is beneficial.

  • Strong written communication skills and the ability to explain quantitative findings to non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Analytical Approach

Candidates should demonstrate an ability to combine statistical evidence with economic reasoning rather than relying exclusively on historical correlations. They should understand the effects of non-stationarity, structural breaks, data revisions, and changing market regimes on currency forecasts.

Experience with macroeconomic databases, economic-release calendars, FX forward points, volatility measures, and central bank expectations would be particularly valuable.

Expected Deliverables

  • Regular currency forecast updates and quantitative market research reports.

  • Validated analytical models with clearly documented assumptions and limitations.

  • Monitoring dashboards covering currency trends, economic indicators, and forecast performance.

  • Scenario analysis explaining the potential FX implications of major macroeconomic events.

  • Research recommendations that help stakeholders interpret data and make informed decisions.

Why Join This Team?

The position offers an opportunity to combine quantitative skills with practical foreign exchange research in Estonia’s international financial and technology environment.
