A high-growth fintech organisation in Estonia is seeking a Principal Payments Infrastructure Engineer to design and evolve the technology infrastructure powering secure, high-volume payment services across European markets.

This is a senior engineering role for a professional who understands that payment infrastructure requires exceptional reliability, transaction integrity, observability, and operational discipline. You will work across engineering, architecture, product, security, finance, and external financial-infrastructure partners.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and evolve scalable infrastructure supporting payment processing and settlement services.
• Build resilient services for transaction routing, payment orchestration, reconciliation, and settlement.
• Develop architectures capable of handling high transaction volumes with predictable performance.
• Establish strong controls around transaction integrity, idempotency, failure recovery, and data consistency.
• Integrate banking, acquiring, payment-service, and financial-infrastructure APIs.
• Improve platform observability through metrics, logging, tracing, and intelligent alerting.
• Lead performance optimisation and capacity-planning initiatives.
• Develop automated deployment, testing, and infrastructure-management processes.
• Investigate complex production incidents and coordinate permanent remediation.
• Partner with security teams to protect payment infrastructure and sensitive financial data.
• Establish engineering standards and mentor senior engineers.
• Contribute to long-term payment-platform architecture and modernisation.

Candidate Profile

• 8+ years of experience in infrastructure engineering, backend engineering, SRE, platform engineering, or payments technology.
• Strong experience with cloud platforms, distributed systems, databases, APIs, and event-driven architectures.
• Practical knowledge of payment processing and financial transaction systems.
• Strong understanding of reliability engineering, observability, disaster recovery, and performance optimisation.
• Experience with Kubernetes, infrastructure-as-code, CI/CD, and modern cloud-native environments.
• Strong architectural judgement and technical leadership capabilities.
